Each year of experience allows you to gain a step. Your initial placement will be determined by the district. The district will use all applicable credits earned after your Bachelor’s to move you across the columns. You can bring in up to 8 years of experience to place you on step 0-8 (and you will earn a step increase each year with appropriate number of days worked and proficient evaluation.)

The professional development we covered earlier can help you earn credits to move you across the lanes/columns - and potentially any other credits you take, like those for certification requirements. Be sure to work with your talent management person to get those courses approved and in Frontline so they count.

If you’ve earned a Masters or PhD, you will receive an annual salary supplement. Sometimes it’s a little hard to figure out if you’re receiving it or not. Here’s the trick - your salary notice will show a specific step and lane - let’s say B54/8, which equals $74,864. However, if you have a Master’s the total will say the $74,864 + 1.25% = $75,800. Once you’ve received your first paycheck - on September 15 - be sure to check that you are paid on the right lane/step and appropriate supplement (if applicable).

These are some of the many items in the contract - please take time to read over it. We have highlighted a few areas that we get questions on regularly from new teachers in Anchorage.

COVER SPED IN SPED GROUP - Special Education (403, p.32)

Added Duties - 150 - many opportunities - make sure you sign addenda before starting job. Often, many times a year, we hear of people doing the work and not getting the addenda. SIgn it first. Also, these are extra time commitments - we highly suggest you get set in your job duties before taking on extra.

Special Education - 403 - lots of great information in this section. Of note and special to this contract is the joint realization that as a special education teacher you have a lot of extra paperwork responsibilities. In J of this section you are provided with 3 days per quarter (12 total for the year) for paperwork, testing, scheduling, etc. If you do not use the three days in the quarter, they are lost - they do not roll over to the next quarter. You are expected to be on site for these work days. Work with your BIL/AA/Admin to secure subs for these days. The sooner you get it on the subfinder, the better - you can schedule them out early.

In-Service Planning - 417 - B. of this section outlines GAP days (Grading/Assessment/Planning). At the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters - you have a day without students and without meetings. The quarter grades/report cards are due, by contract, at the end of the first workday of the following quarter. Many principals will ask for them to be done early - you are welcome to get them done early, but are not required to have them in until the end of the first workday of the following quarter.

Time at Duty Station - 428 - This section overs contract day, lunch, faculty meetings and open house. You are required by contract to be on site 60 minutes outside the student contact day. Generally, that is split 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after. It can be divided to 15/45 or 45/15 - let your supervisor know and it cannot intervfere with regular meetings or assigned duties. Your supervisor can require you to be in your classroom with your students for breakfast in the classroom up to 10 minutes before the start of the student day (no earlier). You are also entitled to a 30 minute duty-free lunch. Up to two faculty meetings can be scheduled per month - not to last more than 1.25 hours past the student day. And you are only required to be at one open house/evening event per year (ice cream social is usually separate and voluntary) When you’re being asked to attend evening events, it’s okay to ask if it is the mandatory open house and it’s okay to say no if it is not the mandatory day.

Instructional Planning Time - 452 - Planning time at the elementary level is at least 4 hours per week in at least 30 minute increments. Secondary planning time is equal to one class period. This is your time - member-directed - and should be free from student supervision. No more than one time per month administration may conduct meetings during this time.

Classroom Coverage - 470 - Sometimes, and sometimes often, there are no subs available. When this happens and you are asked to cover a class for an absent teacher or cover your own class during your prep time, you will be paid $40 per hour in 30 minute increments. This paperwork needs to be submitted within 10 work days of the week you covered.
