Background

Zebulon Pike…

  • meets with seven Dakota leaders near the Bdote.
  • discussed with them that he was sent by the U.S. government and needed land to build a fort.
  • would give them tools and clothes, then they talked about the offer.
  • got only two of the leaders to sign the treaty.

Treaty Negotiations

Zebulon Pike…

  • was sent to Bdote in 1805.
  • was sent by the U.S. government.
  • was sent to build a fort for soldiers, fur traders, and government agents.
  • wanted the leaders to sign the treaty but only two of the seven leaders signed the treaty.

The Results of the Treaty

Leaders…

  • Little Crow III and He Sees Standing Up signed the treaty.
  • gave the U.S. government 2 small but important pieces of land.
  • and the U.S. government did not agree about the final price of the treaty.
  • got $200 worth of goods from Zebulon Pike.

The Results of the Treaty

  • received $2,000 from the U.S. Senate in 1808.
  • now needed the U.S. Senate to approve the 1805 treaty.

The Aftermath of the Treaty

The U.S. government…

  • didn’t send payments or take the land immediately.
  • came with soldiers to build the fort in 1819.
  • started building Fort Snelling, which took 5 years.
  • built the fort where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet.
