DNA- Strawberry Extraction Lab

Strawberries have 56 Chromosomes!!

Procedure

1. Add a strawberry (or half) to a Ziploc storage.
2. Partner 1-will gently smoosh the strawberry.

3. Partner 2- Will add 2 teaspoons of soap, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ cup of water into a cup.

4. Add solution into the Ziploc bag and buffer for about one minute.

5. Use a coffee filter to filter the strawberry juice into a cup.

6. Slowly pour or drip cold alcohol over the top of the strawberry mixture. You want a single layer (about 1 inch) on top of the strawberry mixture. - Wait 3 minutes!

7. White strands will form in the ethanol layer, use a stirring rod to spool the strands.
