English Requirements

4 credits required for all students, Oregon Standard Diploma and Honors.

Freshmen = English Skills 9/10, English 9 Foundations, or English 9

Sophomores = English Skills 9/10 or English 10

Juniors = English Skills 11/12 or English 11

Seniors = English Skills 11/12, English 12, or College Writing

You may also be required to take English Language Development

Math Requirements

3 credits for Oregon Standard Diploma; 4 credits for Honors Diploma. 4 credits recommended for anyone going to college, especially for future STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) majors.

New Oregon 2+1 requirement: 1 credit of Algebra, ½ credit of Geometry, ½ credit of data science/statistics, and a third credit from Advanced Algebra, Computer Data Science, or Technical Math (student choice).

Course sequence: Algebra 1 GeoData +1 Class(es)/Calculus Pathway

Pre-Algebra may be required before you are ready to take Algebra 1.

This pathway is recommended for anyone going to college, especially for future STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) majors. Where you begin depends on your level when you start high school.

Computer Data Science +1 Option

Want to try to predict the future? Want to better understand why your favorite sports team keeps losing or winning? Want to discover ways to reach customers and improve sales for a product? Want to do all of this using math equations, not a crystal ball? Computer data science may be the +1 math class for you!

The Computer Data Science class is recommended for anyone who wants to answer questions using data analysis and/or go into a career that will require data analysis skills.

Technical Math +1 Option (TVCC)

Are you planning on going into a CTE field (construction, welding, etc.) and wish there were a math class for you? Now there is Technical Math! Learn the Algebra and Geometry that is practical in technical/vocational fields. Work with real data and learn the formulas that will help you get things done, including complex measurements and curve fitting.

Medical Math +1 Option

Are you working on a health career pathway or planning a career in the medical dental field, veterinary science, or animal health? Medical math could be a good option for you, either as your +1 option or as an elective in addition to the Calculus Pathway. Learn formulas for measurements, conversions, and drug dosages. Also, learn how to interpret medical information, including charts, graphs, and tables. Be prepared for hands-on math that applies what you learn in the classroom!

Financial Algebra +1 Option

Do you only care about math when you’re counting your Benjamins? Do you hope to be a financial whiz someday? Financial Algebra may be the math class for you!

In Financial Algebra, you will apply what you have learned in previous math courses, including Algebra 1, and learn new math formulas to solve financial problems. Topics will include budgeting, taxes, business, retirement, and other math-related aspects of adulting.

Freshmen = PE 1 (.5 credit)

Health Requirements

1 credit required for all students, Oregon Standard Diploma and Honors.

Freshmen = Health 1 (.5 credit)

1 credit for Oregon Standard Diploma; 2 credits for Honors Diploma. 2 credits recommended for anyone going to college, especially outside of Oregon.

Sophomores = Spanish 1 (or take Spanish 1 as a junior if it doesn’t fit in your schedule)

Additional options = Spanish 2, Spanish 2 Native, Spanish 3/Native, and Biliteracy.

Career Transitions Requirement

.5 credits for all seniors (except for those who earn their FFA State Degrees their junior year).

Taken either semester 1 or semester 2 of senior year.

Science Requirements

3 credits for Oregon Standard Diploma; 4 credits for Honors Diploma. 4+ credits recommended for anyone intending to major in science/medical-related field.

Freshmen: Physical Science (Biology with teacher recommendation only)

Sophomores: Biology or Chemistry. Take both if you plan to take advanced science courses (Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Advanced Biology).

Juniors and seniors: Environmental Science, Chemistry, or (when offered) Anatomy & Physiology, Physics, Geology, Advanced Biology, and Forensic Science.

4 years of the Agriculture Pathway classes can count toward the Honors requirement for 4 years of Science, but don’t forget to consider what you will study in college.

Advanced Biology (Full Year)

Prerequisites: Biology; must be a junior or senior.

Be prepared for advanced-level Biology labs that will improve your understanding of living things and help prepare you for further studies in Biology and other life sciences and/or the health sciences! Dissections will be required. Dual Credit available!

Chemistry (Full Year)

Prerequisites: Algebra; physical science recommended; must be a sophomore, junior, or senior and have an interest in science or healthcare.

Important course for those who want to pursue science dual credit or those who may need a college chemistry course later. The class will cover topics like atoms, molecules, the periodic table, and chemical reactions. Sophomores wanting to take advanced science courses should take this course in addition to a biology course.

Forensic Science

(Semester or Full Year)

Prerequisites: Biology and Physical Science/Chemistry; must be a junior or senior.

This is a science course, not a law enforcement course, focusing on understanding the science of evidence. It will cover topics like forensic anthropology, bloodstain pattern analysis, and trace evidence examination.

Introduction to Biomedical Science (Full Year)

Available to freshmen-seniors interested in lab biology, human and/or animal health, or medicine. Elective; cannot be taken instead of physical science or biology.

Study patient cases to learn more about medical disorders and how to test for them, aid in diagnosis, and treat the patient! Cases involve heart disease, diabetes, traumatic brain injury, and genetic disorders. The class is part of the Health Care Pathway ending with a capstone in Nursing Assistant, EMT, or Biomedical Lab Science.

Students on IEPs will need 1 or 2 periods of Academic Support. Case managers will help with forecasting to make sure their students get what they need.

1 credit for Oregon Standard Diploma; 2 credits for Honors Diploma. Credits are selected from electives offered in these categories.

Why CTE Pathways classes?

  1. Experience hands-on learning.
  2. Learn real-world skills.
  3. Discover what you want to do after high school.
  4. Prepare for an apprenticeship, trade school, or college program–and/or employment–after high school.

  6. Participate in CTE professional organizations (FFA, HOSA, or BPA).

Nursing Assistant (Semester Class)

Prerequisites: Biology; Health Careers and Medical Terminology (may also be taken at the same time as Nursing Assistant). Must be a senior, 17, or have instructor permission. Drug test and background check required.

This is a 2-period class (1st/2nd periods) that requires time for paperwork and clinicals after school, on Fridays, or on weekends.

Learn about body systems, nursing assistant skills, medical terms, and different diseases and conditions treated in a variety of medical settings.

Phlebotomy (Semester Class)

Prerequisites: Biology; Health Careers and Medical Terminology (may also be taken at the same time as Phlebotomy). Must be a senior, 17, or have instructor permission.

This is a 2-period class (1st/2nd periods) that requires time for paperwork and clinicals after school, on Fridays, or on weekends.

Learn to draw blood for testing, transfusions, research, and blood donations!

Jazz Choir (Elective; Zero Hour = Before School)

Learn to sight-read/sight-sing music, honing your music tone singing acapella (without instruments!), performing with the Jazz Band, and preparing to perform at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival next year! Jazz choir will sing swing, bossa nova, jazz pop, and other related genres.
