Introduction

  • We are having a Digital BADGE FAIR!

And at this fair, each of you will have your own booth, where you will sell your own personal designs.

  • Here are some photos I took at FAN X. These are three different booths that were selling badges.
    • How did they display them?
    • What kinds of designs did they do?
    • Were there different sizes or types?

Day 1

Create Your Company

8 of 37

Day 1 – Design your Logo

  • Today you will design a logo in Canva
  • You will come up with a company name and create a logo for it
    • It’s a good idea to have some sort of theme for your company!
  • You will come up with a slogan as well
  • You will later use the logo and slogan in your advertisement, so having a theme makes it a lot easier to design.
  • With two people, you can either have one person design it, both design and pick the best, or press SHARE to work on the same design together.

9 of 37

Day 1 – Design your Logo

  • You can design together on Canva!
    • Click on the + button in the upper right corner and enter your partner’s email address. Then they go to Shared with Me in their Google drive to find it. You can then both be in the same file at the same time.
  • When you are done, you will need to save it into your file.
    • First, go to the internet. Click on the three dots.
    • Choose “Settings”
    • On the left, click on “Downloads”
    • Ensure that the toggle is ON so you can choose where to save files.

Day 1 – Design your Logo

  • On Canva...
    • Go to Create a Design and choose Logo
    • Design your logo
    • To save, click Share, and choose “download.”
    • Make sure it’s a PNG with a transparent background, click Download
    • Choose Documents from the list
    • Save it in this format: 4 Rees, M Logo

    • Turn in to Canvas
    • For pairs, you BOTH need to turn in the same logo. Share the finished logo with your partner so they can also turn it in.
      • You can also decide that one of you designs the logo, and the other will design the booth later on.

Market Research

Segmenting the Market

Gender

What are some other ways we can segment them?

What are some

NON-OBSERVABLE ways?

13 of 37

Day 2 – Market Research

  • What kind of badges do kids want? What is your target market?
    • Your target is absolutely Elk Ridge students, yes, but what submarkets are within this grade? In what ways can you further divide this group?
      • Gender
      • Religion
      • Ethnicity
      • Interests
      • Fandoms
      • Roles (students, daughters, friends)
      • Personality traits
  • As you design your badges, you want designs that are UNIQUE but POPULAR. If you design the same thing someone else does, you won’t get many votes. You need to be ORIGINAL!!!

14 of 37

Day 2 – Market Research

  • Open the Day 2 assignment in Canvas.
  • Answer the questions provided to help you come up with different ideas.
  • Some thoughts as you do this:
    • Using copyrighted material will cost more money for your designs.
    • You are only allowed to design ONE badge that uses copyrighted materials (logos, movies, fandoms, etc)
    • Your other two badge designs could be funny sayings, functional in some way, or original artwork.
  • The more copying and pasting you do from the internet, the more expensive your production cost will be—try to be as original as possible!

15 of 37

Day 2 – Market Research

  • In this assignment you will be asked to think of ways to segment the same group of people.
  • You will then choose ONE of those segments and segment it further.
  • Then you will come up with products for each segment. For example:

Animal lovers

Cat People

Dog People

Bird People

Horse People

Day 3

Design Day

17 of 37

Day 3 – Design Day

  • Today you will design your three original badges in Canva. There is a video that will walk you through how to do it.
  • Some notes on what you may do:
    1. If you copy and paste an image from the internet, your production cost will go UP.
    2. Images from Canva do not increase your production cost
    3. Original artwork is the cheapest things you can do—and often the most effective if you have good artwork. It does not have to come from you—if you know an artist who is willing to draw something for you, you can use that.
    4. Each member of your group should submit their own badges for approval. Everyone designs 3. Later, you will choose your best badges to actually sell.

18 of 37

Day 3 – Design Day

  • Use the video to design your badges.
  • When finished, it is essential you turn them in properly!! You will turn them in TWO WAYS:
    1. Insert the images into the Day 3 google doc on Canvas
    2. Once they are approved and your team has selected which ones you are selling, you will turn the individual .png files into the Rees Hand-in folder. DO NOT do this until they are approved. You will know they are approved if you get a 4 on your Day 3 assignment.
  • Save your individual files in this format: 4 Rees, M Batman
    • This way your buyers will be able to find it quickly when they are making their badges! The final word should be something to identify your design.
  • If you are going to do original artwork, please have it ready by tomorrow. I have a scanner if it needs to be scanned in. If it’s digital, share it to your google drive to get it.

19 of 37

Day 3 – Design Day

  • For Partnerships:
    • If you are on your own, submit three.
    • Each member will submit their own set of three.
    • You will need to select the best ones from both of your design sets.
    • Each partner needs to turn in the Day 3 page with their OWN designs, a minimum of three.
    • After they are approved, you will 4 to actually sell.
    • If you have three in your group, you can select up to 6 to sell.

  1. Open Day 4&7 from Day 4 on Canvas and share with your partner
  2. Get your assigned start number – this will be given to each group.
  3. Choose your 3-6 badges from your group that you will sell. Pick the ones that are most likely to sell!
  4. Enter the badge name and picture in the provided space
  5. Rename each badge in your folder and turn in to Rees Hand-in
  6. Calculate production costs for your badges
  7. Choose a selling price

Day 4 – Production Cost

Enter the name of the design

Enter printing—color, black & white, or hand drawn.

*If your design is in black and white you will still print to color—but it does not take up colored ink, so it’s cheaper.

Copyright:

Trademark—uses a logo or trademarked phrase

Internet Image – you copied an image from the internet but it’s not recognizable from a specific company

CC Image—not a logo, but still recognizable as belonging to a company.

Your production cost will be calculated in the yellow column.

Choose your selling price based on that.

Remember that this is based on the money you have in your account!

Day 5

Booth Design

25 of 37

Day 5 – Booth Design

  • Today you will be designing your booth for the website.
  • It is important that you have saved each individual badge design as a .png file so you can easily insert it into your booth.
  • In Canva, choose Custom Size and create a design that is 6 x 6 inches.
  • Your design needs to include the following:
    • Your logo and slogan
    • Pics of each badge design
    • Each design numbered (Mrs. Rees will tell you what your numbers are)
    • A background and other design elements to make it stand out.
  • This booth design will be added to the website.

26 of 37

Day 5 – Booth Design

  • When completed, you will turn it in on the Day 5 Canvas page, but also you will need to turn it in to Rees Hand-in so Mrs. Rees has a copy of the .jpg file that can be added to the website.
  • You will also need to open the POWERPOINT file on Canvas and edit it with your prices.
  • You will save it as a .jpg and turn it in to Rees hand-in. Save it with the correct format: 4 Rees-White Prices
  • If you are in a partnership, one of you will turn in the booth on canvas and the other will turn in the prices.

Day 6

Sales Day!

29 of 37

Day 6 – Sales Day!

Today you will get to vote and buy!

VOTES

Each student will get to vote on their top five favorite badges in another class.

4th will look at 5th

5th will look at 6th

6th will look at 4th

You will vote by using the google form that is provided on Canvas for Day 6.

Each vote your badges get, counts as a sale at 25%. You will be awarded money for every vote you get!

SALES

You will also get to choose ONE badge to purchase. You will get to make this badge yourself on the machines and keep it, so choose wisely!

This will also be on the Google Form you fill out.

For every badge you designed that gets a sale, you will get 100% of the profits from it!

30 of 37

Day 6 – Sales Day!

YOU ARE SPENDING YOUR CLASS MONEY FOR THIS!!!

  • Before making your purchase, check your account to be sure you have enough to buy the badge you want and the type.
  • Once you have chosen, you will need to withdraw that much money from your account.
  • Your teacher will come around and check each sale before you complete it.

31 of 37

Day 6 – Sales Day!

“What if I don’t have enough money?”

  • What if you want to buy a badge you don’t have enough money for?
    • You MAY overdraw your account and use credit.
    • This is a risky thing to do.
      • If you make enough sales in the votes, you might be just fine.
      • If you don’t, you will be in the negatives. You will need to do extra work in Mrs. Rees’ room to make up the cost.
      • All accounts must be paid by the end of the quarter.
      • You can also choose to get a cheaper type of badge—a smaller one or a pin instead of magnet, for example, to lower the cost.

Day 7

Results

33 of 37

Day 7 – Results

Lets find out how you did!

  • Today you will get the total sales and votes for each of your badges.
  • Enter them the Day 7 page on your Day 4 pricing Google sheet.

  • You must show Mrs. Rees your totals and then have her watch you make your deposit.

34 of 37

Day 7 – Results

Demonstration

  • Mrs. Rees is going to demonstrate how to make a badge.
  • You will also need to watch the video on how to make them
  • You are allowed ONE error. If, the first time you make it, it comes out with a loss, you get one more chance. If you mess up the second time, you do not get to try again.
    • It’s a good idea to have someone with you who has made a successful badge
    • Mrs. Rees will also be there to help.
