Artist Purpose
Mozman decided to study psychoanalysis after receiving an MFA in photography. She uses this to express personal symbolism in her art and to help others apply that to their work as well. Her works are influenced by mythology, psychology, and ideology. They have narratives within them. She has multiple series where her focus is on identity and how they vary between people of different ages and classes like in her series “Casa de Mujeres”. I think her main purpose is seen in the narratives she creates, she wants to tell stories of different people and varying identities. Her series “Casa de Mujeres” for example is meant to tell the story of different women in her family, all played by her mother in the photographs.
Why I Chose This Artist
I liked her work because I’ve always been attracted to pieces with a story. She made a series based a lot around her mother, who is the actual subject in the photographs. Some of her work in which she describes them as blending her own image with her mothers was something that I thought was heavily influenced by her work as a psychoanalyst. I was really taken in by her series “La Negra” and “Casa de Mujeres” because she used her mother in every image. She reminded me of the discussions we had in class based on representation and self-representation and I thought this would be a really good artist for the class to be introduced to.
