Reflections from 2023-2024

By God’s amazing grace, we took steps forward by…

Spending time in God’s Word with our students, knowing that God & His Word produce heart changes, not us.

Embracing problem solving with our students.

Working as a team to meet the needs of our students.

Communicating daily and positively about our students.

Celebrating growth of our students and ourselves.

Committing to consistency and thoughtful planning to give our students our best.

Strong Social Emotional Learning skills allow for successful management of life tasks such as learning, problem solving, controlling impulsivity, and caring about oneself and others. ~WI DPI

6 of 99

“Making SEL skills part of the learning equation is an important step in ensuring Wisconsin children graduate from school, college and career ready. With social and emotional skills, children can manage their feelings, build healthy relationships, and navigate social environments. When adults are supported by good policies and training, children develop the skills needed to prepare them for the world.” ~WI DPI

Why are SEL skills essential in the lives of Christian children?

Christian children…

  • are future spouses and parents.
  • are future teachers and pastors.
  • are salt and light in the world.
  • should have love and compassion for sinners.
  • should be equipped to go out into the world and share Jesus with others.

7 of 99

“Social and emotional learning occurs all the time, whether it is explicitly taught or not. Children and youth learn these skills and behaviors by watching peers and adults in their families, schools, and communities. The goal of SEL instruction is to be intentional in helping students acquire and apply these skills.” ~WI DPI

What are the PK-Adult SEL competencies in WI?

      • Emotional Development
      • Self-Concept
      • Social Competence

FIRST 5 WEEKS OF SCHOOL

September 2024:

  • Week 3 - September 3-6 - Focus on all things OPTIMISTIC
  • Week 4 - September 9-13 - Focus on all things ACCOUNTABLE
  • Week 5 - September 16-20 - Focus on all things RESPECTFUL

In the first 5 weeks, evaluate and reflect on the SEL skills that your group of students needs to intentionally learn and practice. Plan to embed these skills into your lessons so that they receive opportunities to learn and practice across the day and across subject areas. SEL is always happening, but as educators, we can lead and teach with intention and help them grow and thrive.

Rejoice in the Lord

Always!

8/23

Before: Preview BASIC groups with your students so that they know what number group they belong to and what a BASIC group is. Plan to arrive a few minutes early as students should be seated in their groups and ready to begin at 2:40pm.

During: Notice if students need support during Mrs. Blum’s introduction. Some may need an adult to sit or stand near them. Once students move to do the activity, join a group as if you were another student. Let the bigs lead the group with minimal support from you. Have fun!

8/23 PBIS Teaching Plan

Leader: Rachel Blum

Theme: Getting to Know Your BASIC Group

Activity: Who? What? Name Game

Instructions:

*Introduce myself

*Ask them about BASIC groups, purposes of coming together and expectations for our time together

*Teach & model the activity w/teachers (3 teachers)

  • Bigs learn to break directions into smaller steps (our goal is to learn names and one thing about each person. “Before we can do the whole activity, we need to help each other think of actions.” Point to each person & ask “What do you like to do?” (model giving my example first “read”) Help everyone think of their action first. Then play.
  • Stand in a circle. Big starts. Say your name and then do your action. The group copies. Then the next person goes following around the circle. Then the group repeats both in order. Each time the group repeats, start again with the first name and action. At the end the group will say everyone’s name and do all the actions. Sit and talk when done. (Leave time to teach dismissal.)

Leader: Rachel Blum

Theme: Getting to Know Your BASIC Group

Activity: Ask Great Questions

Instructions:

*Reintroduce myself (as Señora Blum) - each person is unique & there is much to learn about each other - God made you!!! Rejoice!

*Ask them to review purposes of coming together and expectations for our time together

*Teach & model the activity

  • Bigs will have the list of questions & sit their group in a circle.
  • Ask each question around the circle so that every member of the group gets to answer. Always start with modeling by having the big go first. (Ask the question and model answering it.) If kids are ready to answer, you don’t have to repeat the question, but some kids might need to hear it again. Create your own questions if you finish the activity early.
  • Remind your group that the answer should be a “Whip Around” with quick answers & attentive listening. Remind them that we are learning about each other and staying focused on that goal. (Leave time to do dismissal at the end.)

Theme: Made Fearfully and Wonderfully

Activity: I Like My Neighbors

Instructions:

*Rejoice in the Lord Always

-each person is unique & there is much to learn about each other; sometimes we are different & sometimes we have things in common. We are fearfully and wonderfully made by an almighty God who has a plan for each of us.

*Teach & model the activity

  • All the members of your group will sit in a circle on the floor.
  • The big will stand and say, ”I like my neighbors, especially those who…__________ (are wearing…, have…, like…)”
  • Kids who fit that description will stand up and switch places with someone else who is standing. They need to sit in a new spot. The big will also try to quickly fill an open spot. (You must switch spots outside the circle and can’t go through it.)
  • Whoever is left standing without a spot will begin again, saying, “I like my neighbors, especially those who…” (Bigs will have to help littles think of something to say and will have to remind kids of safe behaviors as they move.)

Prep your students for their monthly classroom activities with a different teacher. Ask them what the SOAR expectations are during this time. Write what they say on the board for the new adult to see. Tell them that this is an opportunity for them to be taught by someone else and for teachers to get to know students that they don’t see very often. Encourage them to enjoy the time with their classmates and a new adult. All adults should be ready to switch classrooms at 2:43pm so that all groups can promptly begin at 2:45pm. Then at 3:05pm, teachers should have their lesson complete and return to their classes.

Theme: Getting to Know Each Other & Rejoice in Who God Made You

Instructions:

-Teach kids how to introduce themselves by modeling your introduction

-Ask each kid to introduce themselves to the group

-Introduce activity for your age group (3K/4K): Name, Name, Eagle (Duck, Duck, Goose)

  • Teach the kids how to play Name, Name, Eagle (Duck, Duck, Goose). They all sit in a circle. One person is “It”. They say their name aloud and then begin. As they go around tapping heads, they need to say each child’s name. If they forget a name or when they are ready to choose, they should say “Eagle”. When they tap a head and say, “Eagle”, the child gets up and chases the child who is “It” around the circle, both soaring like an eagle. The child who is “It” tries to get to the open space in the circle before the “Eagle” tags them. If the Eagle tags them, the Eagle sits and the “it” child tries again. If the “it” child sits, then it’s the “Eagle’s” turn to be “It” and the game continues.

  • Hello! So happy to see you all today. Think about our theme for the school year… I will say the first part and you say the last word with enthusiasm!

Rejoice in the Lord: Always! I will say it again: REJOICE!

  • Today in chapel, Pastor Zabell shared with us how deep and rich the wisdom of God is. His Word, his wisdom, his power, his love, and his plans are more than we can really understand. This can cause us to feel afraid and confused, but because of God’s amazing love for us we can have peace and joy that he is so much greater than we are.

*Today you will play games in your BASIC groups that may confuse you and frustrate you. However you can have fun and be at peace because your bigs know exactly how to play and lead each game. But the ways to be successful at each game are secrets that only your bigs know. Hopefully you will discover these secrets as you play. When I dismiss your group, your big will lead you to sit in a circle somewhere in the gym. Then listen carefully as you begin playing your first game. Adults - please find a group to join or walk around to enjoy the games. Bigs - raise your hand if you need my help and I will come to answer your questions.

You will stand in a circle and pass the globe around the circle, going either to the right or the left without skipping anyone. After one time around the circle, take a step back. You will step back each time your group makes it around the circle, without dropping the globe.
  • If you drop the globe, you go back to your original location and start again. If you run into another group, combine into one group and keep going while passing two balls.

Leader: Rachel Blum

Theme: Rejoice in All Circumstances

Activity: Heads Up 7 Up

Instructions:

*Introduce the theme and the expectations for our time together:

  • Hello! So happy to see you all today. Think about our theme for the school year… I will say the first part and you say the last word with enthusiasm!

Rejoice in the Lord: Always! I will say it again: REJOICE!

  • Today in chapel, you heard about rejoicing in all circumstances. We have joy from Jesus whether things are going well or whether things are disappointing. God is always with us and he is always the true source of our joy.
  • Today you will play a game that brings joy and disappointment. And it changes from one moment to the next. You will get to practice staying joyful whether it goes your way or not.
  • You will combine with another group and find a line in the gym. Both bigs will pick a few other students to stand with them. The other group members will lay on their tummies with their heads and elbows near the line. The bigs will say “Heads down thumbs up”. The kids on the floor will put their heads down with their eyes closed and their thumbs up. The kids standing will walk quietly to tap the thumb of someone on the ground. If your thumb is touched, you put your thumb down. When the group says “Heads up 7 Up” the kids who have touched thumbs sit up criss cross applesauce. Then they will guess down the line who tapped their thumb. They swap places if they are right. (There should be equal or less kids standing than sitting.)

Theme: Rejoice in All Circumstances

Instructions:

-Introduce activity for your age group (3K-2): Four Corners

  • Part of God’s will for our lives is that we know that no matter the circumstances, He is always with us, always loving us and always working for our good. Sometimes things are disappointing, sometimes they are fun and exciting. Either way, God is with us and we can rejoice in his love and mercy.
  • Today we are going to play Four Corners and see how well you can follow the group plan and handle both disappointments and successes
    • Designate four corners of the room with numbers one through four and choose a player to be the "counter". The counter sits in the middle of the room, closes their eyes, or faces a wall with their eyes closed, and counts to ten aloud. (Adults can help them counter make it to 10. I usually have them count with a word: 1 watermelon, 2 watermelon, 3 watermelon…)
    • While the counter is counting, players move to a corner of their choosing as quietly as possible
    • When the counter reaches zero, everyone must be at a corner. The counter says a number 1-4 and opens their eyes. (Adults can give choices if they need to.) Players standing in the chosen corner sit down in a designated area…carpet, table spots, etc.. (If no one is in the chosen corner, the counter can call out a different number or players can move to a new corner.)
    • The last player standing wins and becomes the new counter.

Sometimes things are disappointing, sometimes they are fun and exciting. Either way, God is with us and we can rejoice in his love and mercy.
  • Today we are going to play Stop the Bus and see how well you can work together in groups and handle both disappointments and successes
    • Write some categories on the board like animals, food, colors, states, sports, students, etc. In small groups, students write those categories on a piece of paper or whiteboard. The teacher says a letter, like “G,” and all teams must fill in each of their categories with a word starting with G, such as… animal - giraffe, food - garlic, color - green, state - Georgia, sport - golf, student - Gavin
  • Whichever team finishes all their categories first yells, “Stop the bus!” and everyone else must stop writing. Award points based on how many answers the teams wrote. Then do it again with a different letter.

Rejoice in the Lord: Always! I will say it again: REJOICE!

  • Today in chapel we heard that we can rejoice however and whenever Jesus is shared because His Word and message of salvation is exactly what all people need. Building positive relationships and working well together gives us opportunities to show Christ’s love. Since we have not been in the gym for PBIS for 8 weeks, we all need to focus on our roles during our time together.
    • Bigs: lead well with love and patience; Middles: follow the group plan and be excellent role models for the littles while you follow the bigs; Littles: follow the group plan and stay focused on the game
  • Today we will play Guess the Leader. Have all your kids sit in a circle. Choose one player to be “It.” They close their eyes and sit in the center of the circle. The big quietly points to a second child as a leader. The Leader starts by making a motion such as rubbing their head, snapping fingers, or waving a hand. Everyone in the group follows the leader. Ask “It” to open their eyes, so they can watch the group. They must try to figure out who the leader is. The leader can change motions as often as they like. “It” has three chances to guess the identity of the Leader. The Leader can become the next “It.”

Start by talking about how we use our words optimistically and respectfully with others, especially when we have different viewpoints or ideas. Remind students that God gave us brains that all think about things differently and we can rejoice in our different gifts and abilities from him.

Then introduce solving riddles. Older students know what riddles are, but younger students may not understand what they are at first. You can choose to have students solve riddles and share their ideas in a whole group setting or you can have them work in partners. These can be printed out or you can use the SMARTboard. Listen for kind words, listening to others ideas, and working together. Compliment those things!

  • Hello! So happy to see you all today. Think about our theme for the school year… I will say the first part and you say the last word with enthusiasm!

Rejoice in the Lord: Always! I will say it again: REJOICE!

  • Today in chapel we heard that we can rejoice because God’s power is made perfect in our weaknesses. We are not strong enough to fight against the devil, sin outside of us or sin inside of us on our own. We need Jesus to shine through us and give us his strength.
  • Today we are going to play a game called Pickle in the Middle. You will be paired in a larger group of two BASIC groups. One big will start in the middle. One big will start with the ball on the outside of the circle. The goal for the kids around the circle is to toss the ball over the person in the middle to the other side. No person would be successful in this game on their own. We will need to work together to try to keep the ball away from the pickle in the middle. The pickle tries to get the ball, but cannot touch other people or leave the circle. Those around the outside must keep their feet planted on the floor. If they drop the ball and can’t reach it without moving their feet, then they cannot get it. Bigs are also going to use their power as bigger kids to make choices that help the game be played well and give others chances to participate (model how to throw it keeping in mind the age of kids). When the pickle gets the ball, then whoever touched it last goes into the circle as the pickle.

  • Hello! Rejoice in the Lord: Always! I will say it again: REJOICE!
  • Today in chapel we heard that we can rejoice because God’s Word has power. God’s Word has the power to create and grow faith in the hearts of people…not because we are so smart, but because God is so powerful and his Word comes from HIm.
  • Today we are going to play a game called Word Whip. You may feel smart while you play the game or you may not. If you get stuck, your BASIC group friends can help you. Our words do not have the power that God’s Words do, but our words do have the power to lift each other up or to tear each other down. Satan loves it when we use our words to hurt others because negative feelings and broken relationships follow after unkind words. Today we will hold each other accountable for using only words that lift each other up.
  • You will sit in a circle and your big will read the first category. You will pass the animal around the circle (pick a direction and keep going that way). Each person will say a word or a phrase that fits the category (without repeating) and then pass it on. If someone gets stuck, give them a little think time and ask them if they’d like help. Once you all say a word/phrase, then you start a new category.

We have been focused on rejoicing all school year. We can especially rejoice because Jesus gave us the greatest gift of all. He sacrificed himself on the cross for us. He did this with love and joy because he wants us to believe in him and have eternal life in heaven with him someday. And that’s not all he gives us. He continues to shower blessings on us while we are living our lives here on earth.

Today we will play gratitude bingo. If you get bingo, please share one thing you are grateful for in your life.

Activity: Would You Rather…?

Instructions:

*Introduce the theme and the expectations for our time together:

  • Hello! Rejoice in the Lord: Always! I will say it again: REJOICE!
  • Today in chapel we heard that we can rejoice because Jesus chose to sacrifice himself to save us. God puts us first. Because of God’s amazing sacrificial love for us, we are saved. Out of thankfulness for his sacrifice and through faith, we can put others before ourselves. Today in our activity we are going to practice following a group plan where each person gets the opportunity to share their thoughts. Every time you listen respectfully to someone share their thoughts and feelings, you are showing Jesus’ love by putting them before yourselves.
  • The game is called: “Would you rather…?”
    • You will all sit in a circle and your big will read a question with two choices. You then go around the circle and each person gets to share what they would pick: the first choice or the second choice. Each person shares and then when it gets back to the big, the big will read the next question. We also show love to others by allowing them to share their opinion without teasing or mocking. Some kids will disagree in your group. That is not a problem. We all have different opinions about many things. Each person should show respect as they listen to each other share. Some of the questions are silly, some are serious, some are funny, some are a little gross. Have fun, but make sure to put others first and show love and respect.

  • Today we are going to play a game that will hopefully bring smiles to your faces and joy to your heart. We are playing a different version of “Duck, Duck, Goose” called, “Duck, Duck, Animal”. (Call groups 1 & 2 up to make a circle. Have two bigs stand. Model walking in different directions passing on their lefts, like driving a car.) Then they begin, “Duck, duck, duck…kangaroo” or “Duck, duck, duck…horse”...the person who is tagged has to follow the tagger copying the way they move. Continue to be safe and pass on the left. Play with optimism and safety. If the tagger gets back to the spot where the person they tagged was sitting then they sit and the next person is the tagger. If they get tagged, then the tagger is “it” again. Two people will be going at a time in each group and sometimes four people will be moving at once. Have fun and look out for each other. Be safe and optimistic.

Theme: Rejoice in God’s Promises

We have been focused on rejoicing all school year. We can especially rejoice because Jesus keeps all of His promises. Today in chapel we heard that “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” He promises that in heaven sin and the effects of sin are no more and we are forever with Jesus! What a tremendous blessing! We only have 15 ½ days left in the school year, so today we are going to play a game that is both fun and meant to focus on the blessings of Christian classmates. Today we are going to play “Who’s Missing?” Choose one student to be “it,” and ask them to sit at the teacher’s desk with their eyes closed and ears covered. Choose a second student to hide somewhere in the classroom (like behind a bookshelf or under a table). Next, all the other students switch desks. Once everyone is sitting somewhere new, the “it” student opens their eyes and uncovers their ears then tries to figure out who’s missing (only receiving help from the group if they ask for it). After they get it, choose a new finder and a new hider and go again.
