Changes between 2014 and 2016

  • Traffic levels decreased 10.9% from 3.62 to 3.224 trillion gross ton-miles (2nd lowest value since 2009).
  • Line-haul fuel use decreased 12.9% from 3.68 to 3.204 billion gallons.
  • Fuel efficiency increased 2.28% from 983.82 GTM/gal to 1,006.42 GTM/gal.
  • Deployment of new Tier 4 locomotives, Tier 0+/Tier 1+ engine upgrades, and continued elimination of Uncontrolled and Tier 0 locomotives reduced the NOx emission factor by approximately 9.4%.

  • The percentage decreases for CO, NH3, and SO2 are linear with the decline in fuel use between 2014 and 2016.

  • The percentage decrease for PM2.5 is lower than that for PM10 due to an emission factor correction for PM2.5 (raised from 92% to 97% of PM10).

  • Large decreases across the board for all pollutants compared to 2007 levels, ranging from 15.3% for CO and NH3 to 95.8% for SO2.
