  • Indicators on usage of ICT and e-commerce in enterprises
  • Content of survey changes annually, new questions or questions are adapted to technological development
  • Examples:
    • 2018: Use of computers, ICT specialists and skills, Access and use of the internet (fixed/mobile connections, websites, internet advertising), cloud computing, 3D printing, robotics, Big Data Analysis, invoicing, e-commerce (websales, EDI-type sales)

ICT usage and e-commerce in enterprises (Annex I)

Target population:

    • Enterprises ≥ 10 persons employed, optionally microenterprises
    • NACE 2.0 sections C-N + group 95.1

Survey Period: First quarter of Year N

Characteristics:

    • Up to 63 mandatory ICT variables, in addition some optional variables (e.g. 25 for the 2019 survey)
    • 3 background variables:�Main economic activity, persons employed, total turnover
  • Data transmission:

Macrodata are to be sent to Eurostat following the transmission format described in a Eurostat document.

Use of ICT in households (Annex II)

  • Indicators on usage of ICT households, most modules are addressed to individuals
  • Content of survey changes annually, new questions or questions are adapted to technological development
  • Examples:
    • 2018: Access to ICT, use of the internet, use of e-government, use of e-commerce, ICT usage at work, digital skills, trust, security and privacy (general/in the context of smart phones)
    • 2019: Access to ICT, use of the internet, use of e-Government, use of e-Commerce, e-skills, internet security

Use of ICT in households (Annex II)

  • Target population:
    • Households with at least one member aged 16 – 74
    • Persons living in households aged 16 – 74
  • Survey period: second quarter of year N
  • Characteristics:
    • Up to 119 mandatory ICT variables, in addition some optional variables (e.g. 9 for the 2019 survey)
    • Social-demographic background variables (13 mandatory, 16 optional):�Age, gender, country of birth, citizenship, educational level, employment situation, occupation, household composition, household income, urbanisation, Regions (NUTS)
  • Data transmission:

Microdata are to be sent to Eurostat following the transmission format described in a Eurostat document.

Deadlines for both annexes/surveys:

For year N:

    • Data should ideally be collected during the second quarter of year N
    • Metadata report to be submitted by 31 May N
    • Data to be submitted to Eurostat by 5 October N
    • Detailed quality report to be sent by 5 November N

! Data which are submitted by 5 October shall be finalised, validated and accepted – Submission of data with an embargo is considered as non-compliant!

Some recommendations

  • Registers are a prerequisite to draw the samples, e.g. business registers for the enterprise survey and populations registers for the household survey.�
  • Core statistics should be in place, e.g. the background variables for the enterprises variables can be taken from SBS, the socio-demographic background information in the household survey are core variables for social statistics.
