ACS101: Course Syllabus

Fall 2022

  • Class Time: Every other Thursday at 9pm
  • Class location: Mellon Hall, Laura Falk Lecture Hall
  • Course Objectives:
    • Advance the field of chemistry through intellectual stimulation and an awareness of the responsibilities and challenges of modern chemistry
    • Connect the divides between the public, chemistry professionals, undergraduate students interested in chemistry, and chemistry as a field
    • Strive to promote professional development by engaging students in research, job, and academic preparation, and presenting technical material in front of a variety of audiences

Policies

  • Meeting Attendance:
    • No more than 2 unexcused absences per semester
    • Just let us know if you can’t make it! (ideally 24 hours before meeting)

  • Event Attendance:
    • Come to at least 2 of our events per semester
    • If you don’t think you can make that, let us know. We’re flexible!
  • If you have good attendance and engage with us, you might get a fun surprise 👀
  • We buy cords for our graduating seniors!
    • Make sure you’re meeting our attendance requirements at least one semester a year, and both semesters your senior year
  • You can also join the national American Chemical Society
    • Fees are covered for chemistry and biochemistry majors
    • If you were previously a national member, bring your renewal form back next month!

T-Shirt Design Contest

  • We want to make new shirts this year, and we want YOU to help!
  • Send your designs to duqacs@gmail.com by September 9th
  • Winner will get a free shirt with their design
  • Note: we will be holding a tie-dye event in October
    • Black and white designs could be featured

Speak Simply

  • Fun public speaking competition with prizes and free food
  • Prepare a 2-minute presentation about anything you want!
  • New this year:
    • Bring a visual aid (ex: a picture, a short slide)
    • Present with a partner
  • Round 1: Practice and get feedback from judges
  • Round 2: Improved presentation to win prizes
