Land Ice/Sea Ice/Grounded Ice

  1. Make a sign labeling each container: land-based ice, floating ice, and grounded ice
  2. For “land-based” and “floating ice” place a foam block in 1/2 of your container—this is your “land”
  3. Pour water into all 3 containers—this is your “ocean”—leave some land above water if you have land-based or floating ice—grounded ice will not have “land”
  4. ”Land-based ice”—add ice on top of your gravel—add as much ice as you can, but be sure that all of the ice is on the foam and not in the water
  5. “Floating ice”—add ice to the water—add as much as you can without it touching the bottom of the container—it needs to all be floating
  6. “Grounded ice” –add the ice block to your container—be sure it is sitting on the bottom and not floating—adjust water level as needed
  7. As accurately as possible AFTER adding the ice, use the vis-a-vis marker to draw a line marking sea level before the ice melts.

Make a prediction:

Place a post-it note for each type of ice to mark your prediction on the chart (raise, lower, or keep the same?) for this question:

How will melting land-based ice /floating ice/grounded ice affect sea level?
