From 1921 to this day, Hanwag stands for traditional handcrafted workmanship combined with technical expertise, continuous innovation, durability and tradition. For 100 years, we have been making high-quality, functional mountaineering and trekking footwear at our headquarters in Vierkirchen near Munich. Together with experienced professional athletes – alpinists, trekkers and mountain guides – our shoe designers and developers create innovative footwear for outdoor use that is perfected down to the smallest detail.

MADE IN EUROPE

A finished Hanwag mountain boot consists of on average 180 separate parts. It’s a complex construction that requires extensive shoemaking expertise and experience. To build boots and shoes with a consistently high quality,means having the right people and the right materials.

The close proximity to our production sites in Hungary and Croatia allows us to continue our demanding construction methods together with local employees according to our rigorous Hanwag quality standards.

This also includes sourcing and working with the finest, high-quality materials – ‘Made in Europe’. To ensure maximum sustainability, the supply chain for virtually all Hanwag raw materials is located within the European Union. This enables shorter transport routes and reduces corresponding CO2 emissions.

We produce all our footwear exclusively in Europe. We see this as the best way to produce in the most sustainable manner possible and ensure the highest quality standards by guaranteeing shorter transport routes and maintaining close, long-standing relationships with our partners.

Shoemakers use a range of construction methods to attach the sole to the upper. At Hanwag, we make our footwear in three different ways.

Cemented

Double Stitching

Direct Injection

The cemented construction is a complex and time-consuming method where the upper is moulded and stretched over the last and attached (lasted) to the insole to form a unit. The upper and insole are then cemented with adhesive under high pressure. Subsequently, the midsole and outsole are added. This method offers the best combination of durability, high performance and economic viability. The main advantages of cement lasted footwear are their outstanding ability to keep their shape and their superior durability – providing they are properly cared for.

We are proud to say that we are one of the few remaining bootmakers still able to master this traditional and demanding handcrafted technique.

WIDE

Goodbye pressure points at the sides of the feet. Standard heel section, but is wider at the forefoot and ball of the foot.

NARROW

Designed for all male and female hikers and mountaineers who find that normal footwear is usually too wide. It offers better support and grip for narrower feet.

BUNION

Many people – often women, but also boulderers and sport climbers – suffer from bunions (hallux valgus) and stiffness of the big toe joint. Our special Bunion Last provides additional room around the big toe joint.

STRAIGHT FIT

Generous toe box that allows the big toe to assume a straight position and provides more room for the toes. This particularly benefits people with a wider forefoot and generally offers enhanced overall comfort and insulation for all feet.

STRAIGHT FIT EXTRA

Combines the wide toe box of our StraightFit Last that allows the big toe to assume a straight position with additional room at the forefoot and the ball of the foot area from our Wide Last. It provides a good fit for a wider forefoot – more space for their big toe.

ALPINE WIDE

Due to the technical requirements, our ALPINE models have a slightly narrower shape. However, our AlpineWide Last gives a wider forefoot area. By alleviating pressure in the toe box, there is less risk of frostbite and it’s possible to wear thicker socks.
