Before...

Before EDTC 300, I had little to no experience with technology, especially with EdTech resources. This class has been an amazing course that has put me out of my comfort zone. I had no twitter, did not blog, and rarely posted anything on my other social media accounts.

Lectures and Readings

Resources

Over this semester, we were required to complete ten blog posts that reflected the course material.

Twitter is a great tool that helped me get resources, meaningful connections and follow educational accounts.

I received amazing classroom tools and resources that I am so excited to use in my classroom.

We covered a large amount of topics through lectures and readings, so I want to focus on three sections.

Along with resources, I also now follow a large amount of educational accounts.

I was able to interact with classmates with ease and create meaningful connections.

Through Twitter, I was able to find many educational resources that I am excited to use!

Educational Accounts:

Here are some of the resources that I got from Twitter either from classmates or other twitter accounts:

  • F.lux - A lighting tool for computers that can help with eye strain
  • Edutopia - A great resource that has articles about educational tools and ideas.
  • Brains on! - A very cool kid science podcast that even adults could listen to learn about interesting science facts.

Here are just some of the educational accounts that I followed over the course of the semester:

Meaningful Connections and Building Community

When I first heard we needed to get Twitter, I immediately groaned. I thought Twitter was for celebrity drama, spreading untrue information and teenagers. I was amazed when I saw the awesome educational community of educators that wanted to support one another. I am so glad that I got the opportunity to get twitter and help build community and have meaningful connections with my EDTC 300 classmates.

What is Digital Literacy ?

Digital literacy is developing critical thinking skills that help us navigate and maneuver through all aspects of digital technology.

In class we discussed fake news as one aspect that we need to critical think to help assess and have the skills to determine if it’s credible or not.

Digital Literacy and Fake News in the Classroom:

Why is it important to teach digital literacy in classroom?

I think any age could benefit from learning from about how to be digitally literate. I think that even for kindergartens there can be discussion about internet safety. To help stop the spread of fake news, and help students stay safe on the internet we need to teach students strategies.

Strategies for stopping Fake News:

  • Find actual news, not from articles, blogs, and social media
  • Reverse image search
  • Lots of ads, pop-up is a good indicator of clickbait
  • Check date
  • Check the domain
  • DO NOT SHARE

Digital Citizenship in the Classroom:

Along with learning how to critical think about digital resources, students also need to learn how to engage and participate while on the internet. For me, I was told do not put stuff on the internet because then it stays there forever. Which is true, but it has made me have a negative relationship with social media and posting. I think that we need to talk about positive ways to participate, without scaring students way from creating a digital citizenship.

My View of Coding:

Benefits of Coding in the Classroom:

When we first talked about coding, I did not see the benefits and could not think of a reason to integrate into the classroom. After completing an hour of code, my views changed!
