Rationale

“Character design, like all design, is a solution to a problem.” (Super Eyepatch Wolf) To truly understand what makes a good character design, we must first present the question: what is a character? A character, simply put, is a compilation of ideologies, beliefs, motivations, and individual traits.

Oftentimes, we are indecisive when it comes to breaking down what makes a character. It is very easy to get overboard with multiple personality traits. We must make sure we do not give our character contradicting characteristics. For example, we can’t just say our character is a party animal if they themselves absolutely despises being around many people.

So how do we find inspiration for our characters? I find observing other people to be the best. It doesn’t have to be an exact copy of a person you know, but perhaps the crooked smile of your father and your brother’s fear of heights can combine to make your own unique character. Give your character traits that are relatable and realistic, and they will surely make a mark on your audience.

Rationale

We all know nobody is perfect. Which means, neither should your characters. Give your characters a physical ‘flaw’, for instance, a big, voluptuous body. You have the choice of either giving them a positive attitude to counter that, or it might play a vital role in their character development. “Despite body shaming, they might carry their weight confidently.” (Now Novel)
