CURRICULUM

Our grade level focus is on reading and phonics. We will spend a lot of time doing read alouds and practicing comprehension skills like author's message and problem/solution. Students also learn fluency & decoding skills. In math, we will focus on base 10 concepts as well as addition and subtraction of two digit numbers. We introduce time, data analysis and 2D and 3D shapes. In science, we cover concepts like moon phases, animal adaptations and plant parts. In social studies, students learn about famous Americans, American symbols and community members. While our curriculum will be different than before, we know that students will still get a great educational experience.

Throughout the day, students will have time to complete assignments, receive teacher feedback and make corrections if needed. I encourage students to be self-directed learners (GLO #1) and take responsibility for their learning by asking for help when needed. I also expect consistent, quality work and push students to always do their personal best (GLO #4).

iREADY ASSESSMENTS & LESSONS

This year our school will be using the iReady as a diagnostic assessment for reading and math. iReady will provide teachers with specific information about your child for the different reading and math domains and skills. It will tell us your child’s areas of strengths and improvements. iReady also creates a customized plan of lessons based on their assessment data and gives teachers lessons to support the areas they are struggling with.

Because of this, we are asking that when your child takes the assessment or completes lessons, please DO NOT HELP THEM read or answer questions. This will give me accurate information on what your child needs so I can support their learning.

As we begin at home learning, we will slowly increase the number and length of daily WebEx meetings your child will need to attend. This is to ease the transition back to school and to help students adjust to working online.

AUGUST 17-20

All students will log in to their teacher’s WebEx meeting at 8am for attendance and to say hi to their classmates. Your child will be asked to stay on the WebEx meeting on their scheduled in-person training day. All the in-person training has been moved online. Your child WILL NOT be coming to school next week.

AT HOME LEARNING

Our class will be using WebEx for all virtual meetings just like in Kindergarten. Please make sure you have downloaded and updated the WebEx app on your computer or device so that your child can enter our virtual meetings easily. Directions for downloading WebEx and using WebEx can be found HERE.

All assignments, expectations and resources will be shared on our Grade 1 Website: bit.ly/nesgrade1. You can find all the necessary information for your child here. If there are any additional questions you have, feel free to email me.

Please keep in mind that attendance will be taken daily at all virtual meetings and daily assignments will be viewed, just like if we were in person. Students are expected to complete assignments and turn them in by the due date. As a heads up, I am responsible for reviewing and assessing student work and giving formative and summative assessments that drive instruction throughout the school year regardless if we are doing at home learning or in person.

AT HOME LEARNING ASSIGNMENTS

Google Classroom will be used to assign daily work. Students will be given time to complete assignments and then submit work using this platform. We will be introducing and guiding the students through Google Classroom and supporting them through the process to gain confidence to use the program independently. One of the features in Google Classroom that we will be using frequently is Google Slides. The students will be utilizing Google Slides to drag and drop their answers and type in their answers as needed.

As we start using Google Classroom, I will be sharing directions so that you can assist your child at home. I will also be available via email and office hours to help walk you through any technical difficulties that you may have. You may also contact the DOE Ohana Help Desk for any tech issues as well. If you are having any issues or have any questions, please email me.
