Budd Park Indoor Soccer Rules
How are indoor rules different than outdoor rules?
Defend the same goal the entire game
No need to switch sides at halftime.
The pre game coin flip determines which team begins with the ball in the first half. The other team begins with the ball the second half.
No Offside
There is no offside in indoor soccer at Budd Park for any age group.
All restarts and free kicks are indirect
This includes goal kicks, kickoffs, corner kicks, kick ins and all free kicks
Indirect free kick = The ball needs to touch 2 players before a goal can be scored.
If a goal is scored directly, the goal is disallowed and the restart is a goal kick.
The only restart that is direct is a PK, as a result of a foul or handball committed by the defending team in its own penalty area
Penalty Kick (Special Budd Park rule)
The restart after a PK is either a kickoff (if a goal is scored) or a goal kick (if the goal is not scored)
The “rebound” off the boards or off the goalkeeper is not live.
If the PK is not scored, the referee blows the whistle to stop play and the restart is a goal kick
Goal Kicks
The restart for a ball that goes over the boards and into the netting between the white corner kick dots and is last touched by the offensive team
May be taken from anywhere in the penalty area.
There is no retreat line in indoor.
Kick ins
Indoor soccer uses a kick in instead of a throw in
The restart for a ball that goes over the boards and into the net is a kick in one metre from the boards from where the ball left play
Must be a kick in, not a “dribble in”, the same player may not touch the ball a second time before someone else touches it
A goal may not be scored directly from a kick in.
If a goal is scored directly from a kick in, the restart is a goal kick.
Corner Kicks
The restart for a ball that goes over the boards and into the netting between the dots. Last touched by the defensive team.
Taken from the corner area 1 metre from the boards in both directions
Taken from the corner “spot” painted on the turf
NO direct goal from a corner kick
Number of Players on the Field
U7/8 | 6 Players (5 players + goalie) | 4 Players minimum (3 players + goalie) |
U9/10 | 8 Players (7 players + goalie) | 4 Players minimum (3 players + goalie) |
U11-U14 | 7 Players (6 players + goalie) | 4 Players minimum (3 players + goalie) |
U15 to U18 | 6 Players (5 players + goalie) | 4 Players minimum (3 players + goalie) |
Substitutions
Unlimited amount of substitutions
U7-U12: Use of a 4 minute buzzer. Play restarts with a goal kick on the half where the ball was at the buzzer, or the appropriate restart if ball was out of play.
U13+: Substitutions may take place “on the fly”. Players should use the door and avoid hopping over the boards. Keep changes “clean”- player comes off and then new player goes on
If changing goalkeepers, the teams need to wait a for stoppage.
No Slide Tackles
Slide tackles are not permitted.
Result is a foul and an indirect free kick, even if there is no contact
If slide tackle takes place in the penalty area, it is a PK
Note- a referee has the option to play advantage and not stop the game
There is a difference between sliding to stop a ball and slide tackling to take the ball away from a player in possession of the ball.
The no slide tackle rule also applies to goalkeepers.
Play Along the Boards- Safety
Absolutely no rough play is permitted along the boards.
No “boarding”, riding a player into the boards, bodychecking, pushing into the boards, etc.
Call fouls quickly and assertively to avoid injury. Error on the side of caution.
Card if necessary.
Player Equipment and Safety
NO jewellery (except for medical alert bracelets)
Club rule- religious bracelets/strings can be securely taped
NO intentional headballs for U7-U10- the restart is IDFK
Players may wear outdoor soccer shoes, as long as they are clean and do not have metal spikes (same as outdoor)
All players must wear shin pads
Players are permitted to wear track pants/sport pants instead of shorts
Player Discipline
Indoor soccer has yellow and red cards- to be used in U11 and older (no cards to be shown in U7-10, coach to carry out discipline)
Yellow card = 2 minute penalty
Red card = 5 minute penalty + dismissal (penalty needs to be served by another player)
2 yellow cards to the same player = dismissal (the second 2 minute penalty will need to be served by a teammate)
