Why I Flipped

todaysmeet.com/wsqkirch

One day in October 2011...

16 of 73

Before the WSQ...

“Go home and watch this video.

Take some notes on what you think is important.

See you tomorrow!”

todaysmeet.com/wsqkirch

17 of 73

It just wasn’t working...

  • I didn’t know if my students were actually watching the video

  • Those that were “watching” weren’t necessarily “learning” or thinking about what was said.

26 of 73

My video-making process

  • Pick one day a week
    • stay late at school
    • choose block of time during weekend
  • Length to record:
    • No editing = video length
    • With Editing = 2-3x video length
  • Record everything FIRST, then edit everything
    • I didn’t do any editing my first 6 months
  • First year Goal: Stay 1 week ahead of students
  • Later Years: Edit / update past videos as needed

Discussion Q6

What sort of HOT and interactive WSQ chat activities could you do in your class?

todaysmeet.com/wsqkirch

66 of 73

Student Feedback

  • It helped me realize I had to hear and watch not just copy whatever you did in the videos.
  • Instead of just memorizing equations and such, the WSQ helps you go in depth of what we're learning and why
  • Letting you know about our confusions is helpful because you get to answer all our confusions during class time.
  • The WSQs helped me think critically about the content. It helped me process the information for the next day.
  • Every time I walk into class, I never feel afraid or scared of what I will be learning because I have the whole period to discuss last night's WSQ.

    • Can combine lessons
  • Specific questions (guided summaries) help students to zone in on most important parts of lesson
  • Throw “freebies” in the Google form for fun
