History of the DEI Work

  • A DEI Task Force was created in in 2020.
  • It was started due to national conversation and attention to equity in education, incidents in our schools and community, feedback from stakeholders, including community and student groups, and District data that identified opportunity gaps for students.
  • The task force developed goals for the DEI work.
  • Creation of School Board committee for DEI.
  • Creation of a District Equity Statement.
  • Creation of a DEI working group in 2023.

District Equity Statement

The Mt. Lebanon School District is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming school environment that recognizes and celebrates the diverse identities of all members of our school community, including students, their families, faculty and staff. All students, regardless of background, identity, or ability will be supported to reach their full potential and pursue their unique talents. The District will provide resources in a just and equitable manner and remove barriers to allow students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Creation of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group

  • Ensure committee members include students, staff representatives, school-based administration, and central office administration.
  • Create mission and vision statements for the working group.
  • Select a name for the working group.
  • To meet consistently to ensure the work is ongoing.
  • Build a culture of trust and commitment within the working group.
  • Engage committee members in dialogue and decision-making related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion priorities.
  • Plan and prioritize future work of the committee.

MISSION: The Mt. VISION: We see a future where every student, family, faculty, and staff member feels at home in Mt. Lebanon. Mt. Lebanon School District seeks to build a lasting legacy of community where diversity naturally thrives and flourishes in our schools, through inclusivity, belonging, and accessibility.

  • The working group selected three of the five goals created by the DEI Task Force to focus on this school year.
  • Working group members are assigned to a subcommittee.
  • Subcommittees are currently working on:
    • Revising goals to reflect current needs.
    • Creating areas of focus and action steps specific to their revised goals.

Subcommittee 1 Goal: Develop a comprehensive professional development plan for all staff to support equity and inclusion.
