READING FOR HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS
Reading for HS Success is a one-trimester course intended for students in grades 9-10. Students can be enrolled based on scores or can self-select and take the course as an elective. In this course, they focus on successful reading in science, social studies, math, and other HS texts. Students dig deeply into how to “read like a scientist/historian/mathematician.” They practice using texts from their current classes to use what they have learned. In this course, students learn strategies for navigating their own high school texts. Each discipline's texts are written using different styles and structures. Examples of strategies learned might include annotation, Cornell note-taking, determining a purpose for reading, paraphrasing, and navigating text taking. .
