Background & Aims

Background

  • People with dementia were some of the worst hit, and most isolated during the pandemic
  • Isolation has been and continues to be a challenge for this demographic
  • Community dementia support is returning to in-person meetings, but how can we keep the benefits of new digital connections?

By co-designing with London boroughs and Voluntary & Community Sector, and people affected by dementia.

Key insights from the workshop

Supporting existing peer led groups deploy and use technology

Interest in a developing a hybrid approach for community group sessions

We try to change people so they can use tech, not change the tech so it can be used. We should use scripting and programming to set up ‘one button’ access to apps etc.

Tech that works in and outside house, different functionality in one consistent, easy to use device / service

trying the technology using Ipads, laptops and or tablets etc., training digital buddies who are experts in technology to visit and support individuals who live alone

Wish for guidance for Affordable technology

Using everyday consumer technology is cheaper and less stigmatising than specialist ‘assistive tech’

Tackling isolation and loneliness is becoming higher priority, to mitigate later health problems.

Points of intervention

Person living in isolation

What devices can they access?

What software can they access?

How do they connect to communities?

Concept 3

Hybrid Communities

16 of 22

Evaluate 3 to 4 managed device solutions with people living with dementia - to create a person-centred guide for introducing technology - incorporating usability, accessibility and purpose.

Develop templates for hybrid group activities

Emerging focus

17 of 22

Key success factors

  • Working with the Voluntary and Community sector (VCS) helps identify and reach digitally excluded residents.
  • Multiple communities engaged to get a broad range of viewpoints.
  • Effective engagement with digital tools to provide useful feedback and guidance.

18 of 22

Next steps

  • Co-design workshops with community dementia support groups in 3 or more boroughs
  • Pilot / test solutions with people living with dementia (in homes or community settings)
  • Develop a person-centred protocol for selecting and introducing technology for people living with dementia.

Questions for discussion

Safety

How do we make sure we do no harm, avoid making people vulnerable when we provide them with greater digital connection?

How do we make people feel safe with the technology they are using?
