Wikidocumentaries creates a page for each Wikidata item. The page combines material from Wikimedia projects and adds linked information, images, newspaper clippings, maps and publications based on API calls and federated SPARQL queries from places like Europeana, Finna, Flickr. More sources and content types can be added.

Users can add topics if they do not find them in Wikidata. For Wikidocumentaries everyone is notable and differing views are allowed. Wikidocumentaries stores its own data in a Wikibase, and intertwines that with Wikidata. It will be one node in the network of federated Wikibases when the technology matures.

Discovered images are saved into Wikimedia Commons along with their polished metadata. Data pulled from other institutions are validated by the users and added to Wikidata. We are looking for the right workflow to include images from the users. Managing consent to publishing images of people will be an important challenge to tackle.
Enriching open projects

Wikidocumentaries is a maker space with open source tools to work with the materials. Participants identify and classify, locate, date and transcribe, put the pieces in context and order. Work is done reciprocally, by giving and getting between the citizen researchers, the GLAMs providing material and the open platforms storing the research.

Wikidocumentaries can tell stories dynamically, for example in automated timelines or Twitter feeds, or you can use the material to remix your own stories. As tools are added, you can create story maps, narrated slideshows or perhaps collectively performed songs. Anyone can add new tools in the collaborative project.

The work is done together. Amateur researchers, local communities, birds-of-a-feather, relatives, friends and families can come together with expert members: museums, libraries, archives and scholars.
