From the Administrative Desk

Because literacy is the cornerstone for accessing understandings, the homework in first through fifth-grade targets enhancing, building and sustaining literacy skills. This means your child's homework could be comprised of writing about what he/she is learning in science, social studies, reading, or even math.

When writing about math your child could be writing to explain his/her understanding of a particular concept and/or writing to complete an error analysis. (When students write to explain the error in a problem and explain the strategy they would use to solve it.) Your child could also be writing to demonstrate his/her understanding of a science or social studies concept. Your child could also be reading fiction or non-fiction text that focuses on a content area, poetry, a narrative or another genre type. The intent is to provide literary homework opportunities that support accessing the world around us.

Our kindergarten scholars will receive a calendar that provides multiple opportunities throughout the different subject areas to enhance their learning. The completed assignments remain at home and the signed calendar is returned at the end of the month.

What We Are Learning

Math-We will continue working on addition and subtraction word problems (OA1). Students are asked to: analyze one-step problems and write equations that can be used to solve them, apply the use of fact families as a strategy to solve one-step problems, build number sense, and interpret models that represent one-step problems. Common Core/iReady is more than just “finding the answer.” Students are expected to explain their reasoning.

Building Thinking Skills-Mrs. Cho, Northside’s Gifted Specialist comes in weekly to work with the class on Thinking Skills. Students are challenged to use clues within the math text, label the grid, and use the elimination process. The goal is reasoning, not speed.

Literacy-Students each have their IRLA color band level. They should be picking just right books and adhering to their Skills Cards tasks. Students will be introduced to Poetry this week. Students will take the challenge to read 100 books this school year..

Assessments-We have completed the iStation online assessment.

A few parents have asked for at home math practice. We looked at the current standard, Numbers and Operations and have a packet for all second graders. This is not mandatory. This work should not be turned in. It is practice. If you would like additional printed home practice, simply let your child’s teacher know.

A folder has been placed on the website so that you have access to the math and reading curriculum and the standards that have been taught. The website link is down below.

Reminders:

*Homework is given Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. All papers should remain in your child’s homework folder. The reading log should be completed after reading each night for 30 minutes. Teachers enter steps for your child daily. If nothing is written down, we are unable to log your child’s steps.

*Based on student age, homework in second grade should take 20 minutes. However in order to get your “American Reading Company steps” students need to read for 30 minutes each night. We are streamlining homework moving forward. The goal complete the tasks while your student is reading.

*The website has been updated. Take a look. If there is anything that you would like in paper pencil copy form, you may request it from your child’s teacher. This is the link -> https://bit.ly/2mtbUaD

What We Are Learning

Math-We will continue working on addition and subtraction word problems (OA1). But this week we move on to Mental Math (OA2). Students will be exploring how using the “make a 10” strategy helps when adding or subtracting with mental math. Adding and subtracting can be easier when one number is 10. By breaking apart a number, you can add or subtract to make 10 and then add or subtract the rest. Attached to this memo is the lesson 3 iReady family letter which gives you examples and a family game to play.

Literacy-In 2nd grade, students are introduced to literary elements. Students identify words and phrases in poems and songs and describe how this language supplies meaning and rhythm.

What is an adverb? An adverb tells more about a verb. Adverbs often tell how (slowly, loudly, lightly, carefully). They can also tell when (later, next, soon, yesterday) or where (there, nearby, somewhere).

What is an adjective? An adjective tells about a noun. Adjectives usually tell what kind (red, loud, old, sweet, happy) or how many (one, ten, few, some, many).

Adjectives and adverbs DO NOT always go beside the word they tell us about.

What is a verb? A verb is a word that tells what someone or something does or is. A verb can tell what is happening now. An action verb tells what someone or something does. A linking verb tells what someone or something is or is like. The words is, are, and am are linking verbs. The linking verbs is, are, and am can be the first word of a question.

In Writing, we will continue writing poems. The poems will be shared at our Quarter 1 conference.

Assessments-Information regarding your child’s iReady math assessment and iStation reading assessment will come home soon. If you have questions, we will discuss these results further at our Quarter 1 face to face parent conferences.

We will take a few assessments this week. By the end of the week your child will have a data point in math, reading, and writing. Look for updated progress on their weekly progress report.

We are excited to continue implementing Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). This year marks the second year for us as an AVID school. Our work as an elementary AVID school here in the district has afforded us several opportunities as we continue to delve into best practices that are embedded in classrooms. One strategy in particular is our work with seminars. All general education teachers along with EC teachers, EL teachers, interventionist and administration participated in professional development at the beginning of the year and will continue this work throughout the year. The seminars provide opportunities for our young scholars to engage in rigorous text discussions.

NC Check-In Benchmarks: On October 28 and October 29th our 3rd - 5th grade students will complete their Reading and Math Benchmarks with NC Check-Ins. (3rd grade will not take the reading Benchmark since they have just recently completed the BOG.) Here are some things to know about NC Check-Ins:

NC Check-Ins are interim assessments developed by the NCDPI that are aligned to North Carolina grade level content standards (for reading and mathematics). The main purpose of NC Check-Ins is to provide students, teachers, and parents with immediate indepth action data and a reliable estimate of students’ current performance on selected subsets of content standards. The end-of-grade (EOG) tests share a common item bank with the NC Check-Ins, which then exposes students to similar item types and rigor found on the EOGs. Also, this is not a timed test. Students will be able to complete the test at their own pace.

Teachers will soon send sign ups home for Quarter 1 conferences for families to schedule a conference. This conference will be a Student-Led Conference. With student-led conferences students have the opportunity to share what they’ve learned, and speak about how they are performing. Also, this allows students to take ownership of their learning and be a part of the conversation. However, please feel free to use part of this time to ask directed questions that you have in mind regarding your child, their progress, and next steps for their learning.

The Benefits of Student-Led Conferences

  • Students actually show parents what they know and are learning in school.
  • Parents are exposed to materials and activities that students engaged in during the school day.
  • Teachers can observe interactions, comment, offer suggestions, and model strategies.
  • Students, parents, and the teacher are all active participants in the conference.

What we are Learning

Math-

Integrated Reading, Writing, and Science- This week, students in second grade will learn the Science key concepts in Research Question #1(RQ#1). Research Question 1 focuses on classification. Through a combination of shared reading, writing activities, and direct instruction students will answer: What kind of bug is this? How do you know? Our students will then read deeply, working to learn everything they can about their individual topics and RQ #1. Please ask your child to share their research topic with you. We also have many live animals arriving in each classroom. Most of them are insects but we have others. We will compare life cycles of each of these animals.

  • 3rd - 5th Benchmark Reports are in your child’s folder today. (This assessment covered material that students have learned/practiced thus far in the year.)
  • The reports give general information down to very specific information about each student’s performance.
  • The overall percentage will be the first number in Column 4 of the report.
  • Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you need a more specific breakdown/explanation of the standards that were tested. Also feel reach to reach out regarding how you can support your child in any area where he/she did not perform as strongly as in other areas.
  • 4th Grade ELA Reports have a discrepancy. The Total, Language, Reading Information, and Reading Literature scores are correct, but the Standards Breakdown (which explains how students performed on questions tied to a specific standard) reads as all zeros. From the Administrative Desk

Counselor Update: We recognize that Mrs. Click, our former School Counselor, was a great resource. Knowing how important Mrs. Click was to Navigator Nation, please know that we are investing time and collaboration to ensure we have a great fit. With that being said, we have conducted our first round of interviews and are next round are being scheduled presently.

Benchmarks: You will recall, earlier in the year, in the month of October, our 3rd - 5th grade students completed their NC Check-In Benchmark Assessments. At the end of this month and beginning of February, our students will complete their Mid Year Check-Ins. (3rd graders will take a Reading Benchmark this time, but it will be through a different online platform that will still provide the necessary data and information regarding their progress and knowledge at this point in the school year.) The testing dates are located below in the “Upcoming Events” column. Following testing, your child’s teacher will provide detailed data reports to inform you about how he/she performed. Please reach out to teachers if any explanation is needed to help better understand the data that will be provided.

Reminder about the NC Check-In Benchmark Tests: NC Check-Ins are interim assessments developed by the NCDPI that are aligned to North Carolina grade level content standards (for reading and mathematics).

All this information will be detailed in an important note that will also be sent home.
