High School: What to Know

Example:

• Each class takes attendance.

• If you have appointments during the school day it is important that you understand you will be marked absent from the class or classes you miss.

​

• An absence = missed instruction.

Jim has been absent from History class 8 days. He has a C in the class, but really wants to get a higher grade.

Unfortunately, he did not complete his makeup works from the days that he missed. Jim could have had a better grade, but did not complete all of his work.

​

Example:

Sasha has been tardy from class and has served after school detention. She also skipped PE and has been counted absent for more than a week over the course of the semester.

​

Sasha is now in danger of failing PE and will not be able to graduate high school until it is completed.

What is a Credit?

Each class is worth a credit. Each student has the opportunity

to take 8 credits per school year OR 4 per semester.

​

1 passed class = 1 credit

EXAMPLE: English I = 1 Credit

If you fail English I you receive 0 credit

A = 4.0 points

B = 3.0 points

C = 2.0 points

D = 1.0 point

Below D is failing and course must be retaken.

What is GPA?

• GPA stands for Grade Point Average
• It is a standard way of measuring academic achievement in the United States.
• Every Class - pass or fail- counts towards you GPA
• Colleges do look at GPA
• GPA can be weighted (AP and Honor Classes)

TYPICAL FRESHMAN ELECTIVE CHOICES:

Cadets learn teamwork, leadership, and responsibility while taking advantage of many opportunities to have fun and excel.

We encourage all of our cadets to complete high school before making any decision about serving in the military, entering into a civilian job or career field, or continuing their education.

ATHLETICS

To be eligible to participate in any sport, a student must meet ALL of the eligibility requirements of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Included among these requirements are the following:

1) pass a minimum of 3 courses the previous semester

2) being in attendance a minimum of 85% of the previous semester

Any student, younger than 18 years of age, must pass at least 3 of the 4 courses in a semester to be academically eligible

to obtain and/or keep a driving permit or driving license.

​

Failure to do so will result in notification by the NC

Department of Motor Vehicles for the student to surrender the permit or license.

​
