Part 1: Plan

Plan out what materials you will need to make your sedimentary rock.

Be precise because your �Limit = 6 total scoops!

Flour (like clay)

Salt (like sand)

Baking soda (to simulate chalky soil)

Corn starch (like silt)

Dry ground coffee �(to simulate organic matter)

Tools:

  • Spray bottle
  • Cups to sort out your scoops
  • A piece of cardboard roll to build the rock IN
  • Piece of Newspaper to build the rock ON

Part 2: Diagram

Make a diagram of what your rock looks like INSIDE the paper towel roll.

  • Label all the ingredients
  • Put them in the order you layered them
  • Make different patterns or textures for each substance.

Clean up!

  1. Write period # and table # (or one person’s name if you’re not at a table)
  2. Take your rock/ newspaper to your class’s storage location.
  3. Wipe down your table top with a damp rag (not paper towels!)
  4. Wash your hands and rinse out the sample cups you used.
  5. Dry the counter near your sink
  6. Put the materials basket at the end of your table.
  7. Sit at your regular seat with your NB open to page 12
