The New Zealand dotterel is found on sandy east coast beaches in the northern North Island. The bird’s habitat is threatened by people (by building near beaches and by sport activities at the beach).

These birds make their nests on the sand in spring. Dotterel eggs can be broken by walkers or eaten by dogs. Dotterel chicks are often disturbed by people and pet dogs over the summer.
