Land Acknowledgement

Carlsbad Democrats, a volunteer club chartered by the San Diego County Democratic Party (SDCDP), exists, meets, and functions as an organization dedicated to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) on the ancestral, traditional, and contemporary lands of the Payomkawichum (the people of the west) known as the Luisenos today. Since time immemorial the Ataxum (the people) lived in harmony with the land and were stewards of their natural environment. We honor their history and their continued presence in their native land and pay our respects to the Luisenos as they continue to be a vital force in our region. Along with this effort of acknowledgement, we strive to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Luiseno people.

We live on the land of the Luiseno People

Ranked Choice Voting - Amy Tobia

Amy Tobia is a local leader for Represent Us, a grassroots organization focused on election reform, voting rights and anti-corruption initiatives nationwide.

As a San Diego business owner and Mom of 2, Amy applies skills acquired over 25 years working in design, and project management to advocate for changes in our community that empower voters and improve our democracy. In the past 6 years, Represent San Diego has become a founding member of two coalitions including More Choice SD, advancing Ranked Choice Voting in San Diego and the Voters' Voice Initiative advocating for public financing of elections. In partnership with Open San DIego, a Code for America Brigade they have developed and host "FollowTheMoneySD", a transparency dashboard to shine a light on funding for local campaigns. In 2023 their members won an Emmy for best informational video for "Democracy Dollars: Driving Us Forward" explaining the power of public financing. The organization is constantly seeking to partner with others throughout San Diego county to build a better democracy - that works for all of us.

Ranked Choice Voting - Overview

A stronger democracy by 2050 is the goal Represent Us has set. We'll get there one community at a time by strengthening voter power through a slew of reforms including ranked choice voting, public financing of elections and greater transparency while protecting election officials and free and fair elections.

In this presentation we'll focus on the impact of Ranked Choice Voting and learn how RCV allows voters their values without the risk of our first-past-the-post system.
