Information about our school

First Avenue School is a public school located in Newark, NJ. FAS has just 1,161 students in grades PK-8.

According to state test scores, 54% of students are proficient in MATH and 63% in ELA

Background information: S.W.T.K

First Avenue School:

Girls Who Code thought about making this app to be able to have a safe platform. Our FAS community is able to communicate with students and staff about concerns and challenges both in and out of school, while implementing technology as a supportive tool. Before we started we researched and brainstormed our ides, and talked to professionals such as Ms.Rodriguez ;our guidance counselor and teachers about the impact of bullying and the negative effect it has on individuals.

The benefits of S.W.T.K

Provide a social impact and an outlet for students to speak up and let their voices be heard.

Assist peers by providing student friendly advice to deal with their challenges.

Peers will be able to communicate and feel safe while remaining anonymous while remediating solutions to conflicts.

Our peers will have access to a safe haven with the SAFE WITH THE KNIGHTS application.

Peers will have the chance to go on App and use the anonymous portal as a journal to document their progress and strategies that have been successful and unsuccessful.

What challenges/ successes in attempting to launch the app?

  • The app kept crashing (bugs)
  • Several test runs.(debugging)
  • Issues working as a team/ collaboration concerns.

Tech Talk

As a group, the girls who code team had some challenges and hurdles. With the determination to be successful we can say that we will continuously work diligently to overcome the bugs, which prevent the process and logic behind the code to innovatively function effectively while accessing S.W.T.K application. We used an app/website called Thunkable to create the app. Thunkable can be downloaded in IOS and android. The app lets us code using blocks and also lets us build/decorate each screen.

Problem/Solution

In the beginning we had issues working as a team but as time passed we started to improve in that. Also when we had technical difficulties we didn't give up and now we are still trying without negativity.
