Introductory Activity - Power of Strategies

Kindergarten Sight Word Challenge:

40 words to 65 words

One of our biggest challenges we were facing this past year in kindergarten was moving from 40 sight words to 65. This was a great way to use a PDSA cycle for the full year and help student be more involved in their learning and to see their growth. First quarter we used circles to track (students number was on these so they knew which was theirs. Each time they test they moved on their class smartie chart and then recorded on their own data tracker. Students were tested around the 10th day. This allowed the teacher to know if what strategies/activities they were doing were working or if a change needed to be made. Once they learned all the sight words for the quarter, students moved up to the jar and students earned a smartie. As the end of the first quarter ended and the second quarter ended, they used diamonds for tracking second quarter words. The cycle for some students continued as they didn’t know all of the first quarter words yet, but we did start second quarter with everyone. At the lower elementary level we found student really liked tracking their growth, they liked having a voice in what strategies/activities were working for them and which ones weren’t.

The last piece is Act or Adjust. Here we are asking students and teachers to look at the data they’ve collected from the study and reflect on where to go next. We’re going to show a quick video of a 5th grade student reflecting a strategy that was successful for him and what he will do in the next unit. (Show video clip)

As you can see, this student was able to identify a strategy that worked and felt empowered to carry that strategy to the next unit.

This also takes place at the higher district level. This past year, through the use of PDSA cycles we identified math strategies that helped teachers and students to be more successful. This led to the creation of an Elementary Math Guide to provide teachers with supports for the current math curriculum with the goal of increasing student achievement in math.
