2021-2022

Essential Question:

How do we collectively transform education to improve access, opportunity and inclusion, especially for students who are historically underserved, so that they can thrive?

6 of 28

Guiding Question:

  • In what ways have my team and I advanced educational equity for students in our system,, increased our individual and collective leadership capacity, and further developed our professional network? How might we share that work during Summer Institute and beyond?

Effective school leaders are key to large-scale, sustainable education reform. For some time, educators have believed that principals must be instructional leaders if they are to be the effective leaders needed for sustained innovation. Newmann, King, and Youngs (2000), for example, found that school capacity is the crucial variable affecting instructional quality and corresponding student achievement. And at the heart of school capacity are principals (leaders) focused on the development of teachers' knowledge and skills, professional community, program coherence, and technical resources.

Microlab Protocol

2

Why A Microlab?

  • Promotes active listening
  • Centers reflection in learning
  • Provides equity of voice
  • Creates a non-judgemental arena
  • Requires collaboration
  • Gives opportunity to be comfortable with ambiguity

13 of 28

Microlab Ground Rules

  • Speaker has the floor for entire 2 minutes to respond
  • Other 2 members of triad listen only, no responding
  • When the elected timekeeper signals time is up, speaker finishes their thought and next speaker begins their 2 minute response
  • Repeat process through last speaker
  • Change the order of speakers for every round
  • If speaker doesn’t fill entire response time, sit in silence for the remainder of the time (something could “bubble up” for the speaker)
    • Group debrief in BoR
