Welcome Back from your extended Labor Day Break! We hope everyone is well rested and ready to go. We have lots of fun and exciting things in store this week. Please mark those calendars for Data Chat & Bingo Night this Thursday, September 10th starting at 5:30. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
Reading
This week will be a “Frenzy.” We will be reading about some fuzzy little friends and learning about poetry. We will be learning about the setting of the story and how to make connections within the text.
Writing/grammar
We will be working with plural nouns during grammar time, and we will begin drafting our procedural informational text.
Math
In math, we will learn how to collect and analyze data using picture graphs and bar graphs.
Science
For science this week, we will continue with our unit on Matter, and exploring matter in the world around us.

Snack
Please be sure to encourage your child to grab a snack each day. This will help build responsibility! Additionally, we are running low on extra snacks in the classroom. If you are able to donate to our extra snack supply we would appreciate it!
We are halfway through the first nine weeks of the 26-27 school year. Progress reports come home on Thursday and early release is on Friday at 12:10 for parent conferences. Please be prompt to your conference as many of these are back to back and time is limited. Please reach out to your child’s teacher for available times.

We will be continue studying nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and tenses in grammar. We are continuing with our How To Writings.
Math
This week we will finish learning about Solving 1-Step Word Problems. We will be focusing on take-apart and comparison one step tasks. We will also take our Mid-Unit Assessment over Lessons 1-3.
Social Studies
We are continuing to learn about how rules and laws work in collaboration with being a good citizen. We will finish these studies this week before starting our Matter Unit in Science.
Reading
This week we will start Module 2. In this module, children will listen to and read texts that inspire them
to look at the details in the world around them to learn new things.

When your child misspells a word with a schwa (like writing "lemun" instead of "lemon"):
We have officially finished our first three weeks of school!! Woohoo!! Students are settling in to routines and procedures & parent conferences are coming upon us quickly. Please be sure to sign up for a conference with your child’s teacher.

Please write your child’s name in their jacket and on their water bottle. Many look the same and students get confused. Also, please remind your child to collect their jackets and water bottles after recess. We have already had many turned into the lost and found. Thank you

Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week we will be completing our CoGat testing Monday 8/24 through Wednesday 8/26. Please be sure students arrive to school on time as we will begin testing promptly at 8:45 each morning.
All beginning of the year assessments are quickly wrapping up and progress reports are coming out soon. Please be sure to stay in touch with your child’s teacher and don’t miss your opportunity to sign up for your parent-teacher conferences the week of September 4th. Have a blessed and wonderful week!

We had another super week! Routines and procedures should becoming smoother for your child. Thank you to all that made it to the 2nd Grade Orientation on Thursday. Lots of wonderful questions and answers were shared.

Writing/grammar
We will be working on our foundational writing skills. This week our focus will be on nouns, adjectives, and verbs. We are learning how to incorporate these into our complete sentences as we include our subjects and predicates, and introducing How to Information Writing.
Math
This week we are wrapping up addition strategies and practicing Mental Math Strategies for Subtraction as well as Solving 1-Step Word Problems.
Social Studies
This week we will be complete practice for our upcoming CoGat before we begin learning about rules and laws. How are the rules at home different from school rules? How are rules and laws the same? How are they different?
Reading
This week in reading, we will review previously taught skills (Main Topic and Story Structure), and we will learn new skills (internal and external character traits and Creating Mental Images) using a variety of text and media.

Dear Parents,
Please be mindful that we are preparing our students this week for our upcoming CoGat assessment. We will officially begin testing on Monday, August 24 and finish on Wednesday, August 26 with makes-ups on the 27th & 28th. Students that miss more than one day of testing will not be permitted to make up the assessment. Please be sure that your child is well rested, has a well balanced breakfast each day, and comes to school prepared to give their best. Testing will take place first thing in the morning during our Social Studies & Science block so please plan to have students arrive on time and plan accordingly for appointments as students will not be called out during the testing administration. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any specific questions or concerns. As always, thank you for all that you do and your continued support of our classroom and students.

This week we are practicing strategies (mental math) for adding single-digit numbers. Please practice your Make Ten, and Counting On strategies.
Reading
We will continue learning how to be a good citizen. We will focus on author’s purpose and summarizing. We will also work on monitoring and clarifying for understanding.
Social studies
We are learning about how to be good citizens and rules and laws.
8/10 – IReady Assessments Begin in class. This gives a snapshot of what your child knows, what they retained over the summer, and what lessons they will review in the Iready program on the computer.
8/12 – 6:00-7:00 p.m. Second Grade Parent Orientation

We’ve had a fabulous first week back! It was an exciting week of getting to know each of your children. This week will continue to practice our SOAR expectations and challenge ourselves academically. Students should be settling into classroom routines and preparing themselves for learning each day. We have a busy week ahead. Our INFORM diagnostic assessment will extend through this week and next, which will be followed closely after by CoGAT. Please be sure to attend our upcoming Parent Orientation on August 13th as we will be sharing very important information for the upcoming school year. As always thank you for your support.
