The Lord chastens those He loves

5 of 34

The Lord chastens those He loves

SCRIPTURE

1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you whom I love, and whom I love I also chasten that their sins may be forgiven, for with the chastisement I prepare a way for their deliverance in all things out of temptation, and I have loved you—

2 Wherefore, ye must needs be chastened and stand rebuked before my face;

3 For ye have sinned against me a very grievous sin, in that ye have not considered the great commandment in all things, that I have given unto you concerning the building of mine house;

- Doctrine and Covenants 95:1-3

The Lord chastens those He loves

D. Todd Christofferson

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Though it is often difficult to endure, truly we ought to rejoice that God considers us worth the time and trouble to correct…If we sincerely desire and strive to measure up to the high expectations of our Heavenly Father, He will ensure that we receive all the help we need, whether it be comforting, strengthening, or chastening. If we are open to it, needed correction will come in many forms and from many sources. It may come in the course of our prayers as God speaks to our mind and heart through the Holy Ghost. It may come in the form of prayers that are answered no or differently than we had expected. Chastening may come as we study the scriptures and are reminded of deficiencies, disobedience, or simply matters neglected…It is a diligent, devoted effort on our part that calls forth this empowering and enabling grace, an effort that certainly includes submission to God’s chastening hand and sincere, unqualified repentance. Let us pray for His love-inspired correction.

All who may seem unkind to me.

Help me live nearer, nearer to thee.

Making things right, and changing my ways.

Help me each day, Father, I pray;

The temple is the house of the Lord

10 of 34

The temple is the house of the Lord

SCRIPTURE

8 Yea, verily I say unto you, I gave unto you a commandment that you should build a house, in the which house I design to endow those whom I have chosen with power from on high;

11 Verily I say unto you, it is my will that you should build a house. If you keep my commandments you shall have power to build it.

12 If you keep not my commandments, the love of the Father shall not continue with you, therefore you shall walk in darkness.

13 Now here is wisdom, and the mind of the Lord—let the house be built, not after the manner of the world, for I give not unto you that ye shall live after the manner of the world;

- Doctrine and Covenants 95:8,11-13

The temple is the house of the Lord

Gordon B. Hinckley

President of the Church

1995 - 2008

Every one of these buildings is sacred. Every one contains the inscription found on the east wall of the Salt Lake Temple: “Holiness to the Lord—the House of the Lord.” Every one has been dedicated for the same purpose: to assist in accomplishing the divine work of God our Eternal Father, who declared, “This is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man”…

We have been criticized for the cost of these structures, a cost which results from the exceptional quality of the workmanship and the materials that go into them. Those who criticize do not understand that these houses are dedicated as the abode of Deity and…are to stand through the Millennium…This is why those of an earlier generation struggled so hard with such tremendous faith to build a house worthy to be dedicated to God our Eternal Father and His Beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I Love to See the Temple(Children’s Songbook #95)

MUSIC

1. I love to see the temple.

I’m going there someday

To feel the Holy Spirit,

To listen and to pray.

For the temple is a house of God,

A place of love and beauty.

I’ll prepare myself while I am young;

This is my sacred duty.

Words and music: Janice Kapp Perry, b. 1938

2. I love to see the temple.

I’ll go inside someday.

I’ll cov’nant with my Father;

I’ll promise to obey.

For the temple is a holy place

Where we are sealed together.

As a child of God, I’ve learned this truth:

A fam’ly is forever.

We can be accepted of the Lord

15 of 34

We can be accepted of the Lord

SCRIPTURE

7 The ax is laid at the root of the trees; and every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be hewn down and cast into the fire. I, the Lord, have spoken it.

8 Verily I say unto you, all among them who know their hearts are honest, and are broken, and their spirits contrite, and are willing to observe their covenants by sacrifice—yea, every sacrifice which I, the Lord, shall command—they are accepted of me.

9 For I, the Lord, will cause them to bring forth as a very fruitful tree which is planted in a goodly land, by a pure stream, that yieldeth much precious fruit.

- Doctrine and Covenants 97:7-9

We can be accepted of the Lord

Erich W. Kopischke

Of the Seventy

As we are personally in tune with the Spirit of the Lord and feel His acceptance, we will be blessed above our understanding and bring forth many fruits of righteousness…Seeking and receiving the acceptance of the Lord will lead to the knowledge that we are chosen and blessed by Him. We will gain increased confidence that He will lead us and direct us for good. His tender mercies will become evident in our hearts, in our lives, and in our families.

With all my heart I invite you to seek the Lord’s acceptance and enjoy His promised blessings. As we follow the simple pattern the Lord has laid out, we will come to know that we are accepted of Him, regardless of our position, status, or mortal limitations. His loving acceptance will motivate us, increase our faith, and help us deal with everything we face in life. Despite our challenges, we will be successful, prosper, and feel at peace.

- Elder Erick W. Kopischke, “Being Accepted of the Lord,”General Conference, April 2013

In the temple God blesses His people

SCRIPTURE

10 Verily I say unto you, that it is my will that a house should be built unto me in the land of Zion, like unto the pattern which I have given you.

13 For a place of thanksgiving for all saints, and for a place of instruction for all those who are called to the work of the ministry in all their several callings and offices;

14 That they may be perfected in the understanding of their ministry, in theory, in principle, and in doctrine, in all things pertaining to the kingdom of God on the earth, the keys of which kingdom have been conferred upon you.

15 And inasmuch as my people build a house unto me in the name of the Lord, and do not suffer any unclean thing to come into it, that it be not defiled, my glory shall rest upon it;

In the temple God blesses His people

Quentin L. Cook

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

My challenge…is for each of us, wherever we live, to see ourselves in the temple. President Monson has stated: “Until you have entered the house of the Lord and have received all the blessings which await you there, you have not obtained everything the Church has to offer. The all-important and crowning blessings of membership in the Church are those blessings which we receive in the temples of God.”

…The combination of increased numbers of temples and advanced technology to fulfill our sacred family history responsibilities for our ancestors makes this the most blessed time in all history…The primary blessings of the temple are the ordinances of exaltation. The gospel plan is about exaltation and encompasses making and keeping sacred covenants with God…The temple is also a place of refuge, thanksgiving, instruction, and understanding…Throughout my life it has been a place of tranquility and peace in a world that is literally in commotion. It is wonderful to leave the cares of the world behind in that sacred setting.

Families Can Be Together Forever(Children’s Songbook #188)

1. I have a fam’ly here on earth.

They are so good to me.

I want to share my life with them through all eternity.

2. While I am in my early years,

I’ll prepare most carefully,

So I can marry in God’s temple for eternity.

MUSIC

Chorus:

Fam’lies can be together forever

Through Heav’nly Father’s plan.

I always want to be with my own family,

And the Lord has shown me how I can.

The Lord has shown me how I can.

The Lord can be with me in my everyday life

SCRIPTURE

15 And inasmuch as my people build a house unto me in the name of the Lord, and do not suffer any unclean thing to come into it, that it be not defiled, my glory shall rest upon it;

16 Yea, and my presence shall be there, for I will come into it, and all the pure in heart that shall come into it shall see God.

17 But if it be defiled I will not come into it, and my glory shall not be there; for I will not come into unholy temples.

The Lord can be with me in my everyday life

Sharon G. Larsen

Former Counselor in the Young Women General Presidency

Holiness is quiet and gentle, easily missed if we aren’t paying attention. The resurrected Lord walked to Emmaus with two men who were so caught up in the events of His Crucifixion and Resurrection that they did not know it was the Lord Himself who was their walking companion.

Years ago I was singing Handel’s Messiah with a group of people from different faiths…during one particular practice, the Spirit told me that I was not only singing notes, I was singing my testimony…For a moment the 300 other voices became a whisper and I felt like I was all alone with the Lord. I felt His love and reassurance that He had carried the griefs and the sorrows of my teenage heart, and through my obedience, He would continue to walk with me for the rest of my life. To feel that blessing and comfort and complete love from the Lord is worth any price… [I]nvite the Lord to walk with you. Let Him be your companion all of your life, every day of your life, so you can return to that home you long for, the holiest place of all.

- Sister Sharon G. Larsen, “Standing in Holy Places,” General Conference, April 2004

If the Savior Stood Beside Me(Children’s Friend )

MUSIC

1. If the Savior stood beside me, would I do the things I do?

Would I think of His commandments, and try harder to be true?

Would I follow His example? Would I live more righteously

if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

2. If the Savior stood beside me, would I say the things I say?

Would my words be true and kind if He was never far away?

Would I try to share the gospel? Would I speak more rev’rently

if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me?

3. He is always near me, though I do not see Him there,

And because He loves me dearly, I am in His watchful care.

So I’ll be the kind of person that I know I’d like to be

if I could see the Savior standing nigh, watching over me.

Zion is “the pure in heart.”

30 of 34

Zion is “the pure in heart.”

SCRIPTURE

18 And, now, behold, if Zion do these things she shall prosper, and spread herself and become very glorious, very great, and very terrible.

19 And the nations of the earth shall honor her, and shall say: Surely Zion is the city of our God, and surely Zion cannot fall, neither be moved out of her place, for God is there, and the hand of the Lord is there;

20 And he hath sworn by the power of his might to be her salvation and her high tower.

21 Therefore, verily, thus saith the Lord, let Zion rejoice, for this is Zion—THE PURE IN HEART; therefore, let Zion rejoice, while all the wicked shall mourn.

- Doctrine and Covenants 97:18-21

31 of 34

Zion is “the pure in heart.”

Joseph B. Wirthlin

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

To be without guile is to be pure in heart—an essential virtue of those who would be counted among true followers of Christ…He revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith that Zion is the pure in heart and that a house is to be built in Zion in which the pure in heart shall see God.

…Visualize in your mind a society in which all are pure in heart and completely free of deceit and dishonesty. Can you imagine a total absence of contention and disputes, with no one ever attempting to deceive another? How would life be if we always were certain, without question, that what others represent to us is true?

…A society without guile is possible. I cite two examples from the scriptures. The first is the City of Holiness, even Zion, a city in which the inhabitants were pure in heart and dwelt in righteousness…The second example is the society of the Nephites that lasted for about two hundred years after the resurrected Lord visited and taught them.

- Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, “Without Guile,” General Conference, April 1988
