Weeks 1 & 2: Number

WALT work out our 6, 7 and 8 times tables from our 5 times table.

  1. Daily Xtra Math and Maths Whizz to support number knowledge acquisition.
  2. Group warm-up: Beep & Buzz: skip-counting practice: 3 and 5; and questioning to check knowledge of 5 times table.
  3. As a group, unpack problem-solving presentation and work through problems exploring arrays based on needs of individuals within group.
  4. Students to complete problem-solving presentation individually.
  5. Students to share problem-solving presentation via individual blogs.
  6. Independent - learners to:
    1. Complete what’s my number presentation (reinforcing number knowledge) for sharing on individual blog.
    2. Practise multiplication facts using cards with a buddy.

Weeks 3 and 4: Number

WALT solve sharing problems using multiplication.

  • Daily Xtra Math and Maths Whizz to support number knowledge acquisition.
  • Group warm-up: questioning to practise and check knowledge of 3, 4 and 5 times tables.
  • As a group, unpack problem-solving presentation and work through problems involving sharing based on needs of individuals within group.
  • Students to complete problem-solving presentation individually.
  • Students to share problem-solving presentation via individual blogs.
  • Independent - learners to:
    • Complete practice work presentation about arrays to help learners consolidate their understandings. Presentations to be shared on individual blogs.
    • Practise multiplication facts using cards with a buddy.

Weeks 5 and 6: Geometry & Measurement

WALT estimate and measure to the nearest centimetre.

  • Daily Xtra Math and Maths Whizz to support number knowledge acquisition.
  • Independent - learners to:
    • Complete practice work daily in Maths book to help learners consolidate their understandings and knowledge about place value and arrays.
    • Early finishers to practise multiplication facts using song and cards with a buddy.
  • Practical measurement activities to be completed with a buddy, in groups and as a class during the week following sequences in these Level 2 NZ Maths units of work:
  • Photos to share individual learning on individual blogs. If possible, video students working with buddies/in small groups on these tasks.

Weeks 7 and 8: Fractions

WALT recognise the whole of an object, equal parts and their names.

  • Daily Xtra Math and Maths Whizz to support number knowledge acquisition.
  • Based on concept and knowledge gaps identified through GLOSS testing, begin fractions learning using NZ Maths unit, Fractions Bits and Parts, to support conceptual understandings about fractions.
  • Students to explore fractions by cutting a whole into equal parts using playdough and templates from unit. Explore over 2-3 days.
  • Using photos of these learning activities to support understandings, students to discuss what they have experienced/learnt with buddies/whole class.
  • Students to then copy and complete follow-up digital presentation individually.
  • Presentations to be shared on individual blogs with appropriate title and labels.
  • Early finishers to:
    • Make a quality blog comment about a buddy’s fractions blog presentation.
    • practise multiplication facts using song and cards with a buddy.

Weeks 9 and 10: Finding our way

WALT use points of the compass to give and follow directions.

  • Daily Xtra Math and Maths Whizz to support number knowledge acquisition.
  • To integrate reading, writing, maths and inquiry, students to explore understandings about geometry (position & orientation) through teacher-created tasks (adapted from NZ Maths units Street Maps).
  • Students to copy and complete follow-up digital presentation individually or with a buddy, based on student choice.
  • Students/groups to work with teacher based on individual needs.
  • Presentations to be shared on individual blogs with appropriate title and labels.
  • Early finishers to:
    • Familiarise themselves with programming spheros to move in different directions and at different speeds.
    • Share and discuss presentations with a buddy.
    • Practise multiplication facts using song and cards with a buddy.
