AGRISCIENCE COURSE NOTEBOOK #purpose

Each student will be issued a course notebook. Replacements are available for an additional fee. This learning strategy is called “Interactive Notebooks”. Proper management of your notebook is essential for your success. Keeping an accurate Table to Contents, adding inserts, use of colors, highlighters, and annotating is helpful. A “perk” for having good notes and proper organization allows for easy use during allotted time on assessments.

  • Our next unit for aquaculture is understanding how to feed fish properly. Everyone likes to feed fish. It is relaxing and fun to watch them buzz around the tank and eat. But we can overfeed, and fowl the water, killing our fish. Proper nutritions for fish is no different than proper nutrition for humans. Honestly, animals do not get junk food like humans or pets in our homes. We are going to begin the process of understanding scientific nutritions for animals, specifically, for fish!
  • First, what are the nutritional needs of fish. Please complete the following lesson parts for understanding the nutritional needs of fish; by reading the passage, completing the skills lab, and then complete the exit ticket. We will be discussing these during class tomorrow. As always, you can complete the work electronically, but at some point, you will want to make sure the information is in your notebook.

How are feeds formulated? Which component of nutrition is the the base?

Supply Chain Steps

  • Crops and Other Nutritional Elements are obtained, now are called feed components (ingredients)
  • Stored in dry storage bins or food-grade drums at feed manufacturers AKA feed mills
  • Recipe is created based on Crude Protein (CP). All other requirements are adjusted after the CP balances in the ration.
  • Feed is packaged, labeled, and sent to a distribution warehouse.
  • Shipped to consumers and farms or local retail feed stores (ie: PetSmart and PetCo, Tractor Supply, Fleet Farm, United Coop, several fish farms are also feed dealers)

Instructor Demonstration

In this section, a “mixing feed” math practice is available. Please complete the practice scenarios.

Mix feed for the following scenarios:

  • 1 ton of 52%CP fish feed
  • 500lbs of 36%CP fish feed
  • 700lbs of 46%CP fish feed
  • 250lbs of 16%CP fish feed

Ingredient Options:

  • Cornmeal @ 10%CP
  • Soybean meal @ 32%CP
  • Blood/Bone meal @60%CP
