The second paragraph of excerpt three deals with the concept of bullying as a “rite of passage”. Read it carefully and complete the following:

1. Summarize the main point of the paragraph.

• Choose a sentence or phrase that you would use as a direct quotation if you were using this research in your

own writing.

3. Write a sentence using this quotation. Embed it properly!

Read excerpt four and, in a short para-graph, paraphrase the message in the ex-cerpt. Embed two short quotations in your paragraph. The quotations should be one sentence or a portion of a sentence.

Quotations need to be embedded and cited. Intro-duce the quotation using the following “formula”:

Your words + the quote = a complete sentence (author page #).

This is supported by Mahan who states that “change is imperative” (Smith 34).

When introducing quotations, avoid using “says” all of the time. Here are some alternatives:

Whenever you use outside information in your writing, whether it be a direct quotation or paraphrased information, you must cite the source in a parenthetical citation. The purpose of these citations is to direct the reader to the correct source on the works cited page, so the word inside the citation must correspond to the first word of the source on the works cited page.

Inside the parenthesis, include:

​

1. The author’s name, if available. Omit if you have referenced the author when introducing the information.

​

• The page number, if it is a print source (Lessing 34).

​

• If there is more than one author, include all names in the parenthesis (Weston and Adler 58).

​

• If there are more than four authors, use the first author’s name and then et al,

Latin for and others (Bradley et al 134).

​

5. If you are citing two authors with the same last name, include first names as well (Karen Bradley 223).

​

• If the author is not available, use the title—or the first few words if it is long (Learning to Paraphrase 78).
