Unit 1.0
Introduction
Big Idea: Throughout this unit students reflect on personal math strengths, identify and practice norms for math learning, learn classroom procedures, and establish routines for the use of supplies and manipulatives. Teachers get to know their students as mathematicians, focusing on their strengths.

Unit objectives:
We can show math ideas in different ways. | Mistakes help us grow. | We talk to each other about math. | In math we think, build, draw and talk. | We ask questions to help us learn. |
Lessons* and Norms
*5 lessons to be taught over 10 days
| Norma | Preguntas |
| Haz uso de múltiples estrategias y múltiples representaciones. |
|
| Hablemos de lo que cada uno piensa. |
|
| Haz preguntas hasta que las ideas tengan sentido. |
|
| Los errores son regalos que promueven el debate. |
|
| Las respuestas son importantes pero no representan las Matemáticas. |
|
Preguntas que ayudan a enfatizar diferentes normas matemáticas:
Daily Routine: Number of Days in School
Objective: To build one-to-one correspondence, lay the foundation for an understanding of place value, and give students a concrete sense of the magnitude of numbers up to 180 and their relationship to the passage of time.
See the Number of Days in School (Spanish) slides for a description of how to incorporate this routine into your lessons.

Options for monitoring and sharing work:
Students hold up their items or drawings for Zoom classroom to see.
Students take a picture/drawing and send to their teacher (can do on Seesaw Scavenger Hunt / Spanish).
Come back together to share examples of one of the attributes that students found.
Teacher/students talks about all the different math ideas students shared.

Options for Asynchronous or Continuing Activities
Use Seesaw Scavenger Hunt / Spanish assignment or search Seesaw Community for other scavenger hunt activities.
Have students find objects that match other attributes.
Have students find objects that show the class something about themselves or their family (eg. favorite red meal, tool for measuring something important in their house, etc). Teacher may demonstrate with something about themself.
Compile a running list of all the objects found by the class for each attribute.
Do a brief Days in School Routine (Spanish) with students.

Use Math Tools Slidedeck (Spanish) (to make editable, assign in google classroom) or Seesaw Make a Pattern (Spanish) to have students explore the manipulatives .
Students should return to explore the manipulatives in these virtual environments as often as time and interest allow. Giving students a lot of time to explore and get comfortable with these virtual environments will help them learn the important math of this grade all year long.
Puzzles that give an outline to be filled with pattern block shapes are here: apps.mathlearningcenter.org/pattern-shapes/
Students can explore any of these tools on the virtual manipulative sites.
Do a brief Number of Days in School Routine (Spanish) with students.
