You and your friends are participating in a race.
The race is a total of 12 miles long but it is made up of one small loop
that is of a mile long. To complete the race you and your friends
will run the loop enough times to equal 12 miles.
To complete the 12 miles, HOW MANY of the mile
loops will you and your friends need to run?
Will it be more than 12? Why or why not?

If we look at it this way, we can build up from 1 to 12 to see what the answer will be.

So we have 11 more miles to figure out.

That would mean that there would be 6 thirds in 2 miles.

If we continue this way, we can calculate how many one- third mile loops you and your friend will need to run to complete the 12 mile race.
