Remote Access Possibilities

  • Security Concerns!
  • Works with both XP and Vista – very similar…
  • You can connect to your home computer from work
  • You can connect to your work computer from home
  • You can connect to your office computer from a lab or podium
  • You can give access to your computer to a technical support provider (or take access to provide support)
  • You need to prepare the host computer before you leave it
    • You’ll need the Computer Name
    • You may need the IP address

Sharing Files

  • Novell – if it’s on each computer, save your files there to share

  • My Drop Box www.getdropbox.com – install on each computer and share your files

Once connected, your computer “becomes” the other computer – you cannot share file space. Here are some options:

Set up your “host” computer

  • Sign on as an Administrator and note the user name and password
  • Set to allow Remote Access
  • Record your Computer Name
  • Record your IP Address
  • Set your computer to not hibernate or to wake on access
  • Some security settings may prevent access!

VPN

If you are off campus trying to access a computer on campus, run a VPN client. Here are two possibilities:

  • Go to http://vpn.clemson.edu and sign on
  • Go to http://www.clemson.edu/laptop and go to the Software Installer, run it, and install the Cisco VPN client. Then run it and sign on

  • Note: If you have computer that was set up by Clemson or is running an image, you probably have the Cisco VPN client already installed.
  • Second Note: You do NOT need this if you are already on campus!
