WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING?

Service-learning addresses the issue of academic relevance by connecting academic knowledge, skills and concepts with accomplishing an "authentic purpose" in the school and community.

Service-learning embodies the belief that knowledge is not merely transmitted from teacher to learner, but rather is gained by the learner through guided interaction with the environment.

BUILDING SCHOOLS TO BUILD A BETTER FUTURE PROJECT

Community Service Project between the International School Hamburg, Germany and The Overseas School of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Students from many international schools come from a place of privilege and often are not aware of real world issues facing others outside their bubble. This was a project begun in the first year our family was at ISHamburg. A group of Year 10 students (that included our daughter) raised money to re build 5 preschools that had been washed away during the Tsunami that affected Sri Lanka (and many other countries) in December 2014. We had only just left Sri Lanka in July 2014 to move to Hamburg after teaching at the Overseas School of Colombo for the past 5 years. We watched in horror while on holiday in Denmark that Christmas as many of the places we’d visited on a regular basis while living there, were washed away, and almost everyone we knew from our school had been affected by the tragedy in some way. The librarian at ISH promoted the project through displays, holding information evenings in the library for parents and students about the project, and by eventually becoming one of the staff chaperones after our family had left the school. The project continues.

ROOM TO READ

Whole school community service project at Renaisssance International School Saigon to raise funds for girls education in Vietnam.

Room to Read is a charity organization helping young woman in developing countries gain access to education who also build libraries in underprivileged schools. Our school became involved when Sara Davis, an Aussie Room to Read ambassador, visited our school in April 2019. We discovered there was a Vietnamese chapter of Room to Read and one of the projects in that chapter was being run by a famous Vietnamese model Ha‘hen. We held a Readathon, a book fair and hosted a surprise visit from the model herself. This led to spin off projects developed by the students: book to audio project for schools without a library from KS 3 students and a book club project from Year 13 students. Renaissance school and library is continuing its involvement with Room to Read through Carlos Diaz my wonderful replacement. Tell story of her visit + the story of student asking if they could keep the money they raised if they won the prize for raising the most money.

Josie and Hanh Nguyen (in Year 7 when this was made) volunteered to make a promotional video for the Readathon held in April 2021 just before the last lockdown. The video was used by Room to Read on their website.
