Fall 2023

What are the biggest challenges?

6 of 34

Challenges with research

  • Abundance of information available
  • Students are overconfident in their ability to “search”
  • Students continue to be developing critical thinking and evaluation skills (#fakenews)
  • We have a really BIG and COMPLEX library system and website
  • Students are unfamiliar with “scholarly” research (e.g. peer review process, how scholarly info is created)
  • Students use Google (and Wikipedia) for everything
  • Students have difficulty selecting and scoping topic to assignments

We want all CIS students to try the U Libraries website!

Using library and website correlated to higher GPA and retention among UMN first year students!

Students need to get UMN email, password, and “Duo” (two-factor authentication) set up
