Objectives
In today’s class, we will discuss why coral reefs are important and ways to decrease the dangers that threaten them in Costa Rica and around the world. We will learn some good ways to take notes when gathering information about this topic, and to ask for and offer clarification when needed.

Comparatives
A pony is faster than a turtle.
Main rule: adj -er + “than” for comparisons
Manuel Antonio is hotter than San José.
Special rule: one-syllable adj that ends in -CVC combination: double the final consonant and add -er
My car is more beautiful than yours.
General rule for adjectives that have two or more syllables:
“more” + adjective + “than”
My dog is prettier than yours.
Special rule for two-syllable adjs that end in -y: Change the y for an i and add -er
Drinking Coke is worse than drinking water.
Irregular comparatives: they don’t follow any rules
Go HERE to compare animals that live in the ocean.
Drinking Coke is less healthy than drinking water.
Only rule for this: “less” + adj or adv + “than”
Juan is cleverer but also bitterer than Sergio. –Clever, bitter, narrow
The street where I live is narrower and simpler than yours.
Special rule: two-syllable adjs that end in -ow and -er, add -er; two-syllable adjs that end in -le, add -r.
She runs as quickly (adv) as I do.

General rule: “as” + adv or adj + “as”

Count nouns: “as many” + count noun + “as”
I feel as much happiness as you do.
She bought three times as much rice as you.
Uncountable or non count nouns: “as much” + noncount noun + “as”
