HEP Industry partnership and mobility (LoI 15)

  • Is partnership with industry possible in order to develop skill set in our young scientists => Better job and more successful career
  • Training programs during PhD and PostDoctoral studies in partnership with Industry

The goal of this LoI is to explore and recommend further possibilities to scale up this efforts with ideas for internships in partnership with industry that work on HEP projects.

Improving Access to Careers beyond HEP (LoI 17)

  • One of the big challenge while seeking non-HEP jobs id that there is no portal to communicate with HEP Alumni working in the industry =>

CERN Alumni Platform

The goal of this LoI is to to study and identify ways to make the process of transition to industry jobs more smooth and transparent.

CPD:WP4 - White Paper 3+4

    • Driver: Facilitating transition to non-HEP Career.

ABSTRACT: About two-third of HEP PhDs establish careers outside academia in area like software, data science, finance, healthcare, journalism, and NGOs. Skills and knowledge developed during HEP research have been long sought after, like complex problem solving, programming, data analysis, math, statistics and scientific publishing. With increasing mobility to industry, ways should be developed to make this transition smooth. Creating targeted internships with National Lab partners in areas of Accelerator Technology, Computer and Information Science, Detector and Engineering Technology, Environment and Safety and Radiation Therapies would facilitate the training process. However, many of the postdocs and students are not based at the National labs that have broader access to the above opportunities. A direct involvement from supervisor and mentors in planning the career early on, based on the interest, is key to the success.

From the Survey Q: If you are a supervisor: in your opinion, how important is it for HEP supervisors to prepare trainees/students for career paths outside HEP? Numerical: Very unimportant --- Very importantQ: If you are a supervisor: how much of your trainee/student mentorship is focused on preparing them to pursue career paths outside HEP? Numerical: None ------- A significant fractionQ: If you are a supervisor, would you support your trainee/student’s participation in a HEP--Industry partnership/mobility program? (choose all that apply) Yes, I would support my trainee/student’s participation as part of their HEP training. Yes, I would support my trainee/student’s participation, but only if the program has a separate funding for labor and/or travel costs. Yes, I would support my trainee/student’s participation, but only for short amounts of time No Other _________________Q: Would you like to participate in projects that connect HEP and Industry partners? Yes No

Q: If yes: Why and in which cases would you be interested? (choose all that apply) This would be beneficial to my career Only if it does not require a significant time commitment Only if the costs of the project are covered by HEP collaborations and/or Industry partners Other ________________

Q: How prepared and/or informed do you feel to pursue jobs outside HEP? Numerical: Not at all prepared/informed -- Very well prepared/informed

Q: When you have interviewed for HEP positions (graduate school, postdoctoral research, faculty positions), did you feel “connected” to the local group? I felt connected due to similar cultures/backgrounds

I felt connected despite differences in culture/background

I did not feel connected

I did not feel connected in particular due to a language barrier

Q: If you have left HEP research/academia for Industry, would you be interested in returning for any reason? (choose all that apply) I would return full-time if the compensation was competitive with the private sector If research-only positions were available (ex: research scientist, etc) If I am able to continue my work with my current employer (ex: work half-time in HEP) I would be interested in contributing to HEP research while continuing to work in industry if access were available I am no longer interested in a HEP academic career Other _______________
