Just some brief thoughts to keep in mind regarding the classroom experience...

  1. All work is in googledocs. Each student has a personalized googledoc where they have access, I have access, and all work is composed on this document every day. Each day, our goal is to make progress on our googledoc.

2) Presentation of content will take on different forms (Direct instruction, varied use of instructional resources, collaborative inquiry.) Yet, underscoring the basis of all content delivery will be an individualization of the instructional process in terms of content (What we cover) and approach (How we cover it).

3. Individualization of work products and work process through conferencing is essential.

  • Overall goal is to conference with every student and feedback on googledocs at least once a week.
  • This ensures every student will get what they need every day and that every student is seen, heard, and centered in the construction of their learning.

2. Decompression zone

  • Advisory is the one setting in Julian where students can simply be. I use it as an opportunity for students to unwind, use time to get work from classes done, ensure that everything is “all good.” They don’t get many moments to have these spaces at Julian. This is one of them.

The “Why” behind this course

  • Students who have a chance to explore the complexities of issues related to othering stand a better chance of grasping their implications and interrupting those patterns.
  • Going into high school, America to Me gives students an opportunity to project themselves into the future and operationally “see” what they will be experiencing in the near future.
