The Faculty Committee will grant membership

in the National Honor Society to only the

most qualified candidates. Students

selected will have a strong and diverse

background in ALL four areas

(scholarship, character, service and

leadership). A weakness in any one area

will prevent you from acceptance.

Additionally, the Faculty Committee will base

their decision on whether or not the student has

a variety of activities for service and leadership.

Membership will be extended to those students

who have service and leadership in different

activities (as opposed to just one or two activities).

• For service, if all of your service events are required events for a particular class such as Leadership or SBL, you will not score well on the scoring rubric. You must go above and beyond what is required.

SERVICE

• If you have an on-going signature sheet that you are using to keep track of volunteer hours, you may include that as part of your NHS app. However, on the service portion of the NHS form, be sure to include not only the activity, but the organization with which the service opportunity was performed, and the role of the person within in the organization who has signed off the hours for you.

CHARACTER

The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative,

demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, maintains a good and clean lifestyle and has not violated any state educational codes.

​

In this section list any clubs, sports teams, or organizations outside of school you are involved in.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

• Don’t mark semesters that haven’t occurred yet. In other words, if you’re a junior, don’t mark any boxes on second semester junior year, even if you can reasonably assume that you will continue in that particular activity or position.

Student Owned Organizations

For Service/Character/Leadership Categories:

​

--If you are a BUSINESS OWNER or NONPROFIT ORGANIZER (CEO), please see Ms. Lutjens or Ms. Pope for appropriate verification/validation options.

--For student employees/volunteers in a student owned/operated organization –you should also provide a copy of the business/organization in which you are employed/volunteer, as well as an abstract or job description with a timesheet.

--Student Owned/Organizations MUST have pre-verification in order to be acknowledged.

Some organizations may appear more than once on your application. For example, you may have CSF listed on your Scholarship page, but you may also have it listed on the Leadership page if you were an officer in CSF.

• The application form requires that you obtain signatures from advisors/coaches/mentors in order to verify participation in the various organizations you include. Please be sure to begin the process of seeking out those verifying signatures as soon as possible, as it may take some time to meet up with those advisors—particularly if they are not campus-related advisors. Budget your time; plan accordingly.

• Signatures are the preferred method of verification. You should use phone numbers ONLY if your supervisor is OFF CAMPUS and unavailable.

• Students should have both in school and out of school experiences for each category as often as possible, and not all entries on the forms should be from one specific area, such as music or sports.

​

• Students must be a BHS student for a semester in order to qualify for NHS. Transferring students who have already been inducted will be included in the BHS NHS organization if they can provide verification of NHS acceptance.

​

• The forms should be typed. The blank form is available on both Ms. Pope’s and Ms. Lutjens’ websites for download. Please be sure you check for spelling! If you find you’ve thought of something to add after you’ve acquired signatures, it is okay to add a line or two by hand, but be neat!

​

• If possible, have your parents take a look at your form prior to turning it in. They might help you remember other activities/areas of involvement you have not thought to include.

• Forms will be due in Office 100 NO LATER than 3:30 p.m. on Monday, October 10^th. NO EXCEPTIONS. It is our goal to have the committee make its selection early enough that students who are accepted in the NHS organization will be able to include that acceptance on college applications.

• All students will be notified of their status after the committee has met via letter. If a student has not been selected for this year, feedback will be provided as to what areas might need improvement for subsequent years. This feedback can be invaluable for underclassmen who wish to reapply the following year.

• Membership Requirement: Students Must Complete 20 Hours of Community Service Each Year to Qualify to Wear the NHS Sash at Graduation. Seniors will be asked to verify this year’s hours no later than mid-March, so please be sure you have planned to complete those hours prior to then. We will attempt to provide additional volunteer hours, but students may continue volunteer opportunities they are already invested in to meet the requirement as well.

• Please remember that NHS accepts the MOST well-rounded and active scholars. If you are not included in this year’s NHS honorees, you can still feel proud of the hard work and effort you have made to contribute to your school and your community. By virtue of the fact that you have chosen to apply, you are demonstrating a commitment that already goes above and beyond your average high school student. Well done!

LOGISTICS

• The NHS form may be found by using the NHS link on either Ms. Pope’s or Ms. Lutjens’ school website.

• Forms are due by October 10^th in Office 100.

​

• Students selected for inclusion in NHS this year will be asked to participate in an NHS Induction Ceremony in the spring, where we celebrate those students with their teachers and parents. There will be a brief meeting after the selection committee has made their decision to review the details of the ceremony.
• Students will participate in fundraisers in the fall and spring to raise money toward the cost of the Induction Ceremony.

• NHS students will be asked to pay $30 dues, which goes toward National membership and helps defray the cost of the Induction Ceremony, the certificates, and the sash students wear at graduation.

​

• We will also possibly be order t-shirts this year and will be participating in community service events. More details about these will follow during the membership meeting after the selection committee has notified us of the students accepted to NHS this year.

• Incumbents (students who are already members)—please stay after for a few minutes to discuss leadership positions for this year’s NHS.
