Records/Sources

Attaching Sources

In family history, records are documents created at or near the time of a person’s life events that provide evidence about who they were and how they were connected to others.

Records can tell us things like:

  • when and where someone was born, married, or died
  • who their parents, spouse, or children were
  • where they lived, worked, worshipped, or served
  • how their life changed over time

Take Time to Read the Original Record

Indexes can be wrongNames, dates, and places are often misread or mis transcribed

The original record shows moreMarginal notes, witnesses, occupations, addresses, and relationships may not appear in summaries

Context prevents mistakesReading the full record helps distinguish between people with the same name

Clues are often hidden in plain sightNeighbors, godparents, informants, and witnesses often point to family connections

Bottom line:📜 The index points you to the record — the record tells the story

FamilySearch-Research Helps

Attaching Sources

Record hints are automatically generated by FamilySearch when information in a person’s profile (name, dates, places, family members) match details found in historical records.

Research Helps

Help identify sources that can document a person’s life

Save time by pointing researchers to likely matches

Record hints are suggestions, not confirmations

Review each hint carefully before attaching

Attaching Hints:A record needs multiple points of agreement. One matching item is not enough.

Attaching Sources

  • Spelling Variations
  • Nicknames/middle names

Be extra cautious with:

  • Common names (Smith, Brown and Jones)
  • Family members with the same name
  • Small variations are normal
  • Make sure that the two sources don’t reflect an unrealistic lifespan

Names:

Dates:

  • Locations should generally match or make sense in context

Locations:

  • Compare family members
  • Differences in children, spouses or parents may indicate different individuals
  • Use family context to provide clues for a 2nd marriage

Relationships

Identify and Resolve Conflicts Thoughtfully

Not all mismatches are deal-breakers.

Acceptable discrepancies:

  • Spelling variations
  • Minor age differences
  • Handwriting transcription mistakes (check original source when possible)

Concerning conflicts (pause and investigate):

  • Different spouses
  • Wrong parents
  • Locations that do not match migration patterns
  • Birth dates off by many years
  • Two children with same name but different ages
