  • Goth- a rude and barbaric culture
  • Visigoths or Barbaric Goths- the barbarians that sacked Rome in 410 AD
  • Ignorance of the mid-evil times

  • Setting portrays horror and dread as well as worldly decay.
  • Usually a hero and a villain and a wanderer.
  • Plot mirrors the ruined world in its dealings with a protagonist's fall from grace as she succumbs to temptation from a villain.
  • Usually about the supernatural but it is possible to connect with the humans in the novel
