Overview

We find ourselves at a critical juncture in history, where our collective responsibility towards each other cannot be overlooked. In the face of humanitarian crises, it is not just an option but a moral imperative for us to come together and act.

Born to respond to the urgent crisis in Palestine, ShaperAid is a Global Shapers cross-hub collaboration, uniting hearts and resources to raise funds for crucial humanitarian aid worldwide.

We stand united to support the civilian population and care for the most vulnerable, embodying the essence of global solidarity and shared humanity.

Mission & Vision

The Mission for ShaperAid is to mobilize global fundraising efforts to deliver direct relief for civilian populations in need around the world, in partnership with reputable NGO’s that have demonstrated the capacity to provide immediate support on the ground.

There is one objective for each campaign. For example, ShaperAid Gaza’s objective was to mobilize a global fundraising effort through Anera to deliver direct relief for families in Gaza.

Any Global Shapers Hub facing a humanitarian crisis is welcome to use the ShaperAid platform to mobilize for direct relief in their local community, in partnership with an established NGO.

What is a ShaperAid campaign, and why create one?

ShaperAid campaigns aim to provide humanitarian aid, raise awareness, and support vulnerable communities. By creating a ShaperAid campaign, you can leverage the full power of the Global Shaper Community to drive global fundraising efforts towards a humanitarian crisis happening in your community.

ShaperAid’s platform includes (1) global social media presence, connected across the Global Shaper network; (2) a large cross-Hub platform reaching all Shaper hubs globally, and; (3) a community of experienced ShaperAid team members.

If your community is facing a humanitarian challenge – whether due to natural disaster, geopolitical conflict, or any other cause – ShaperAid can be a tool to support you.

How do I start a campaign?

  1. Identify if there is an urgent humanitarian crisis at hand, and if the ShaperAid Playbook is right for your community.
  2. Research and select a trustworthy NGO to partner with. This should be an organization with established presence and demonstrated efficiency in fund allocation. (See page on ‘Partnering with an NGO’ for more details)
  3. Set up a donation page with the NGO partner (or via a tool like GoFundMe if a donation page is not available), and keep open lines of communication with NGO.
  4. Bring together a team of Shapers (from your own Hub or from other Hubs around the world) to join you on your campaign, and assign clear roles and responsibilities.
  5. Connect with the ShaperAid team to initiate your ShaperAid campaign.
  6. Spread the word. Regularly create social media campaigns that can be shared via ShaperAid channels to reach Shapers around the world, and initiate your own local fundraising campaigns (example of Artists4Aid).
  7. Document your progress and share your impact with the community.
  8. Once you reach your goal, celebrate with your NGO partner!

[❗] This detailed guide will provide you with all of the actions you would need to build your own campaign, broken down into pre-, during, and post-campaign actions.

Partnering with an NGO

For each ShaperAid campaign, we will help guide your Hub to partner with an NGO with established local presence that has demonstrated the ability to efficiently allocate funds. This is to enable the Hub to operate as efficiently as possible to address the crisis within the local ecosystem, and also helps the Hub build stronger connections with local partners and support NGO’s already doing the work.

To determine if an NGO is suitable, consider the following:

  • Research NGOs with a strong track record and transparent operations
  • Review efficiency of NGO’s operations (e.g. how much of fundraising goes towards organizational overhead vs activities that directly help the beneficiary)

👉 You can use https://www.charitynavigator.org/ or similar websites

  • Review NGO’s presence and reputation with the community you are looking to serve
  • Have a conversation with NGO leaders to determine compatibility

Once the NGO is confirmed, work with the NGO to set up a mechanism to accept donations. If no direct site is available, consider tools like GoFundMe, LivingGood, GiveButter, etc.

How can I help?

If you are looking for a ShaperAid campaign to support outside of your region, consider reaching out to the local Hub that is organizing the campaign to assist, or reach out to a member of the ShaperAid core team to learn about a ShaperAid campaign that may fit your interests and/or areas of expertise.

Some Hubs around the world have chosen to take on local fundraising challenges in support of campaigns around the world. Artists4Aid, created by the Barcelona Hub, is a great example of this.

WHAT IS ‘ShaperAid’?

ShaperAid is a collaborative effort by Global Shapers from different hubs to raise funds for humanitarian aid worldwide. ShaperAid Gaza specifically focuses on providing relief for families in Gaza through Anera.

PARTNER AND DONATION:

We are working with Anera because it efficiently allocates funds, with 96% going directly to relief efforts. The campaign encourages contributions for blood bags, hygiene kits, food parcels, and emphasizes the importance of raising awareness, outreach, donations, and engaging with corporate and institutional donors. 👉 More info here and here.

OBJECTIVE:

To raise funds for humanitarian aid organizations. One objective for each project: ShaperAid's objective is to mobilize a global fundraising effort through Anera to deliver direct relief for families in Gaza, where over 60% of Gaza's population has been displaced, with 30% of housing damaged or destroyed.

SHORT-TERM GOAL:

Our current goal is to raise USD 30,000 to support NGO Anera's initiatives in Gaza. This fund will directly impact displaced families, providing essential items such as blood bags, hygiene kits, and food parcels. We may raise the fundraising cap based on what’s needed on the ground. 👉 More info here.

LONG-TERM CHANGE:

Beyond financial contributions, our initiative aims to raise awareness globally, fostering empathy and understanding about crisis in Gaza. By standing together, we strive to make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by the conflict.

ShaperAid Gaza: Our partner NGO, Anera

  1. Anera was one of the first to respond to the crisis in Gaza.
  2. It operates very efficiently; ~96% of donations go towards programs and aid, while only <4% goes to overhead costs.
  3. Anera has been operating in Palestine and the surrounding region for the past 55 years, with deep trusted relationships with local community organizations. Even now, when aid organizations are unable to get into Gaza, Anera is still able to mobilize support and provide food and aid.
  4. Global Shapers have worked with Anera on a few disaster relief initiatives, including the blast in Beirut (2020). Info here.
  5. The allocation of this humanitarian aid is verifiable by a Palestinian Global Shaper, Saddam Sayyaleh (Amman Hub), Community Champion for the Levant region and Regional Development Lead at Anera.

Read more about Anera’s work in Gaza here, financial reports here, and other info in this slide here.
