What is Special Collections?

  • Special collections are library materials that are handled separately from regular library collections because of age, scarcity, market value, subject matter, condition, or physical format.

  • Special collections contain more than rare books, manuscripts, and archives. It also includes maps, games, original works of art, realia (non book objects, such as furniture, weaponry, or locks of hair), textiles, audiovisual materials, and digital materials, many of which are acquired in tandem with books, archives, and manuscripts as part of a dedicated collection.
