Absences

• Absent notes are required. Absences are recorded on HS applications, report cards, etc.
• High Schools look at 6th & 7^th grade report card grades and attendance for the year.

Grades: Teachers input grades into the DOE Grading system

PBIS: Positive behavior is encouraged in all grades. Teachers reward students with points each day for their behavior. Once students reach a certain amount of points, they get to participate in an activity that the class and/or grade chooses!

Bathroom Policy: In order to optimize learning, students are not allowed out of the classroom the first 10 minutes of the period and 10 minutes before the end of the period.

MAP Testing

• Students will be MAP tested 3 times a year. Fall, Winter, and Spring.

• Why do we MAP test?

MAP testing is designed to measure students achievement and growth throughout the school year. It informs the teacher where the student exceeds and where they need additional support.

• Students see their MAP data and make goals with their teachers.

Cell Phone Policy- Yond’r

POLICY FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

As a school we strive to provide the best learning environment for your child. Students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school: cell phones and school issued laptops and iPads.

Students are not permitted to bring the following electronic items to school:

• “Smart” watches, and other similar computing devices (“computing devices”); and
• Portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS.
• Home devices stay at home.

The use of cell phones at school is subject to the conditions below.

1. Cell phones may not be turned on or used during the school day, class trips or during before/afterschool programs. This ban includes the use of cell phones for photography or videoing purposes.
2. Each student will be provided a Yondr pouch in September. If they lose it they will have to purchase a new one or turn in the cell phone daily to the Dean, Ms. Bucolo.
3. All Cell phones must remain turned off and stored in the student's Yondr ( 5^th – 8^th grade) pouch during the school day and after school. Students will be able to unlock the Yondr pouch at dismissal. If they need to contact you, we will provide them access to a phone. We will never deny your child access to you.
4. Students who use cell phones, in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“IAUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

Cell Phone Policy (con’t)

Confiscation and return of cell phones

Students who use their cell phones during the school day or during self-sustaining after school will meet with the following disciplinary consequences:

• First Infraction- Confiscation of cell phone by teacher. Cell phones will be sent to the Dean’s office. The Dean will notify parents. The phone will be returned to a parent or guardian only. .
• Second Infraction - Confiscation of cell phone by teacher. Cell phones will be sent to the Principal’s office. The cell phone will be returned to a parent or guardian only.
• Third Infraction - Confiscation of cell phone by teacher. Cell phones will be sent to the Principal’s office. Parents will be notified by the Principal. The cell phone will be returned to a parent or guardian. There will be a revocation of cell phone privilege for students for a period of one month (in consultation with parent). Students will receive in-school disciplinary consequences according to the New York City Discipline Code. Consequences may include a removal from class by the teacher or a Principal’s Suspension.

Students who bring prohibited electronic devices to school or to self-sustaining after school will meet with the following disciplinary consequences. This includes using school issued devices inappropriately:

• First Infraction - Confiscation of electronic device by teacher. Electronic device will be sent to the Principal’s office. Parents will be notified by the Principal. The electronic device will be returned to the student at end of school day.
• Second Infraction - Confiscation of electronic device by teacher. Electronic device will be sent to the Principal’s office. Parents will be notified by the Principal. The electronic device will be returned to a parent at end of school day.
• Third Infraction - Confiscation of electronic device by teacher. Electronic device will be sent to the Principal’s office. Parents will be notified by the Principal. The electronic device will be returned to a parent at end of school day. Student will receive in-school disciplinary consequence according to the New York City Discipline Code. Consequences may include a removal from class by the teacher or a Principal’s Suspension.

PLEASE NOTE:  PS 19 and school personnel are not responsible for lost, stolen, or broken cell phones, computing devices, portable music devices, “Smart” watches or any other entertainment systems.  Students who bring these items to school assume all risks.

SHSAT Prep (8th Grade Only)

Starting in the next few weeks, a SHSAT prep class will be offered to the 8th grade students. Students take the SHSAT test to gain admittance to the Specialized High Schools. Students are not required to attend this prep class or take the exam. However, if they are taking the SHSAT, it would be a good idea to attend the prep class. The review class will take place 2 afternoons per week directly after school. One day will be with Mr. Frey for Math and the other day will be with Mrs. Patafio for ELA. Students that sign up must attend the class and will not be allowed to leave the building without a parent/guardian signing them out.

A permission slip will be sent home for students to sign up.

Expectations

• We ask that the children work hard and try their best. They are encouraged to ask questions

and work with their peers

• Absences: students are responsible for getting their assignments and missing notes and HW
• Supplies: Students are required to have a marble notebook and 2 folders
• Typical Day … 

Classwork – Learning targets are written in notebooks. Notes are modeled with

responses for reading done in class. Writing on different topics and utilizing different

formats will be done mostly in class with some assignments completed at home. For student comfort, Google Docs will be utilized.

Homework – Homework is given most nights. It will consists of nightly reading responses and writing assignments that are given to reinforce the day’s lesson. Students are to read their independent reading books for at least 30 minutes each night.       

• Curriculum

We will be studying various units this school year from the Expeditionary Learning curriculum.  Short response writing pieces and extended response essays will relate to the various works of literature that we read.  Additional books may be added based on the needs and interests of our students.
