What is Title I?

  • Title I is the oldest and largest federally funded educational program.
  • Title I is a federally funded grant initiated in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty.
  • The US Department of Education distributes money to the states, who then distribute funds to schools based on percentages of low income families.
  • 93% of all Massachusetts schools received some funding through Title I.

How Do Schools in Massachusetts Receive Funds?

  • The US Department of Education distributes funding to states.
  • The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education distributes funds to schools. The amount of funding is based on the percentage of low-income families in the district.

There are Two Types of Title I Funded Programs

  • School-wide Programs
    • For districts where at least 40% of the student population is at the poverty level.
    • Funds can be used to support all students within the school.
  • Targeted Assistance Programs
    • For districts with less than 40% of the student population is at the poverty level.
    • Funds can be used to support individual students based on multiple criteria

Lunenburg is a Targeted Assistance School

  • While Title 1 funds are based on the percentage of poverty level families, Title 1 is NOT just for low income students.

How Can Title I Funds be Used?

  • Title I funds have allowed us to implement our Response to Intervention/RTI model.
    • Academic support is provided to specific students based on multiple criteria

Targeted Assistance: �Title I Students are Selected Based on Multiple Criteria

  • Benchmark Assessments
  • Classroom Performance
  • Parent or Teacher Recommendation
  • Previous Participation in Response to Intervention (RTI)

Progress Monitoring

  • Once a student is selected to receive academic support, their progress is continually monitored to determine progress and the success of the interventions.

Groups are Flexible

  • Progress monitoring allows us to determine those students that no longer require academic support.
  • Periodic Benchmark Assessments allow us to determine students that may benefit from academic support throughout the year.

The School’s Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide quality curriculum and instruction, including academic support
  • Provide progress reports with each report card
  • Provide parent conferences during scheduled times and upon request
  • Provide opportunities for parents to volunteer in the classrooms
  • Hold an annual Parent Information Meeting

    • Let your child know school is important
    • Attendance at school is critical
    • Be involved at homework time
    • Read to your child
    • Encourage your child to read to you
    • Volunteer in your child’s class or at school functions if you can
    • Communicate with the school, ask questions

  • Join the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization)
  • Join the PAC/SAL (Parent Advisory Council/Supporting All Learners)
  • Help with the Title I Needs Assessment and Program Evaluation by completing the annual survey
  • Attend Open Houses, Parent Conferences, and Family Events

  • Meetings are on the second Monday of the month and start at 7:00 PM in Room D132 at the Lunenburg Middle High School.

PAC/SAL�Parents Advisory Council/Supporting All Learners

  • Meetings are on the second Friday of every month during the school year.
  • Meetings are held at 11:00 AM in Room D132 at the Lunenburg Middle High School.
  • Great support and resource for parents of children with challenges.
  • This includes students in the IEP process and those receiving Title I services.
