ABOUT ME

I have been a Registered Nurse since the year 2000.

I obtained a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry in 2003.

Nurse Practitioner & Clinical Nurse Specialist since 2005.

I graduated the UCLA School of Nursing,

and was privileged to be the only nurse at UCLA be a recipient of the:

"2005 Outstanding Graduate Student Award."

After over 20 years of experience in the traditional healthcare setting;

I found myself stepping outside of the traditional systems of health to learn about cutting edge, Functional Medicine.

I have obtained Post Masters Education & Training through

the Institute of Functional Medicine.

I am very passionate about investigating the root cause of dis-ease, and then fixing it using holistic principles of Functional Medicine.

OBJECTIVES

  1. The learner will identify the pitfalls of functional medicine testing.
  2. The learner will be able to name 2 low-cost Functional Medicine interventions for gut health.
  3. The participant will be able to identify allopathic lab data that can be utilized in place of functional medicine testing
  4. The participant will be able to create a personalized & holistic plan of care for patients, without expensive functional medicine testing

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?

  1. Functional medicine determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual.
  2. The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
  3. By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, functional medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are believed to be important for cardiovascular health. Many investigations have been carried out in an attempt to examine the effect of n-3 PUFAs intake, in the form of supplementation or fortified foods, for the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and risk factors for CVD.

“The present systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that ACV consumption yielded beneficial effects on serum Total Cholesterol & Post Prandial Glucose levels. “

“Several studies indicate apple cider vinegar (ACV)’s usefulness in lowering post- prandial glycemic response, specifically by slowing of gastric motility, which would seem paradoxical with respect to its potential value for upper GI symptoms.”

“Acetic acid (a major component of vinegar) was suggested as a key to slowing down of gastric emptying and decreasing of disaccharidase activity in the small intestinal, intestine maltase, lactase, and sucrose activities. Additionally, it promotes the uptake of glucose by muscle performance consequently, decreasing fasting blood glucose.”

ACV was used in the gum formulation mentioned above, and while subjects found beneficial effects in relief of heart- burn and acid reflux, it is challenging to elucidate whether this effect was due to the ACV or the other ingredients.
